Page 5: BTEC Media Unit 9: Photographic Techniques (Light Drawing)

Modelling

Choose 2 volunteers

Demo use of equipment - camera, flash, light pen. Describe process for selecting a long exposure in manual mode

Describe relationship between ambient and flash light

Group/Pair Work

In pairs or small groups, experiment with available technology to create light drawings.

P2 = use photographic technology to partly realise intentionsM2 = use photographic technology competently to mainly realise intentionsD2 = use photographic technology skilfully to create photographs which clearly achieve intentions

Modelling

Demo use of off camera flash to create multiple portraits

Group/Pair Work

In pairs or small groups, continue to experiment with available technology to create light drawings and multiple portraits.

P2 = use photographic technology to partly realise intentionsM2 = use photographic technology competently to mainly realise intentionsD2 = use photographic technology skilfully to create photographs which clearly achieve intentions

Independent Learning

Capture the images from the photoshoot. Organise in an Event in iPhoto and edit to correct exposure. Upload images to your Flickr account. Title and tag appropriately. Create a new Set entitled ‘Light Drawings’. Embed slideshow in blog and on relevant page in your ePortfolio.Describe the techniques you used to create the images and evaluate their quality using an appropriate tool e.g. Audioboo, Xtranormal

P3: review strengths and weaknesses of own workM3: describe strengths and weaknesses of own work with some detail and with reference to appropriate illustrative examplesD3: evaluate strengths and weaknesses of own work with reference to precise and detailed illustrative examples

Review and Reflection

Share successful and less successful light drawing images created by group - discuss qualities

What have we learned about ambient and flash light?

What have we learned about the ways in which SLR cameras can record the behaviour of light?
