We are excited to offer a variety of creative learning opportunities for youth. These classes will inspire a love of learning that will last a lifetime and lead to future hobbies or careers. Classes will be offered at or near Parkland College. Information about specific location will be provided to registered students. Refunds are not available after the registration deadline.
WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY, GRADES 4–8 Innovative technology combined with imagination and some simple design skills can equal fun and functional clothing and accessories! Using conductive thread instead of wire, you will create wearable technology that goes everywhere with you. Curriculum specialist Katie Hicks leads an energizing class for young techno-engineers.

ARCHERY FOR YOUTH, GRADES 5–12 Channel your inner Katniss Everdeen and learn the sport of target archery. Join archery experts from Hunter’s Haven at their indoor range to learn how to shoot a bow and arrow prop- erly. NEW BEGINNING BRIDGE, GRADES 8–12 Is learning to play bridge really for kids? Of course! It has all the same skill challenges and social benefits for kids as for adults and can teach healthy competition, social networking, inferential thinking, and teamwork. NEW ART SAMPLER, GRADES 9–12 Create unique and imaginative works through amazing hands- on experience with ceramics, metals, and printmaking. Learn and use hand-building clay techniques and decorative surfaces to produce ceramic forms. Design and create one-of-a-kind wearable art while learning basic metals techniques of cold joining and soldering. And, in printmaking, you’ll be intro- duced to the monotype process. The workshop will conclude with each student having produced original works in all three disciplines. Supplies and tools provided.

WORD 2013 LEVEL 1 Review the basic functions and features of Word 2013 with Wendy Barker. After an introduction to Word’s window components, learn how to use the Help system and navigate documents. Practice entering and editing text, creating and saving documents, enhancing the appearance of a document by using various formatting options, creating tables, inserting headers and footers, proofing and printing documents, and inserting graphics. Prerequisite: Windows XP/Vista/7 or equivalent knowledge.

Learn Computers at Your Own Pace! Microsoft Office 2013, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, Introduction to Windows, Google, com- puter basics, keyboarding, and more—all self-paced. Online, or in a supervised computer lab—or both. You may enroll at any time during the semester, but all work must be completed by December 11.

Make a difference in your community. • Become a volunteer tutor — help an adult learn. • Fifteen hours of training is required to become an • adult literacy volunteer.
PROJECT READ LITERACY
VOLUNTEER TUTORS: • help adults improve basic reading, writing, math,
and English language skills, • work one-on-one with adult students and also
assist teachers in Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language classes, and
• tutor at satellite sites throughout Champaign- Urbana and surrounding communities.
Call 217/353-2662 to schedule an orientation to the program. This project is made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a Division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.

BOOT CAMP Join Peg Olson, AFAA certified, for an intense workout that burns calories and tones all the major muscle groups. You will use light weights and resistance tubes to develop and tone the body and incorporate cardio drills to burn calories and strengthen the heart. The majority of class involves indoor cir- cuits and makes use of the great outdoors as weather allows.

INTERVAL CONDITIONING Alternate strength conditioning with cardio intervals for a com- plete workout with AFAA-certified instructor Peg Olson. This fun class combines strength and power with cardio and agil- ity training. Intervals consist of three components driving the caloric burn and afterburn while toning and shaping the body.

PILATES This Pilates mat class can be your introduction to Pilates or a continuation of your current practice. Casey Coon, instructor for The Method Pilates and Mat and Standing Pilates, will guide you through modifications and variations for all fitness lev- els. CAREGIVER TIPS FOR DEMENTIA: HOME SAFETY MODIFICATIONS Help your family member with dementia live safely at home with less effort by making simple changes in the home. Caregivers will meet with Rebecca Bahnke, occupational ther- apist, to learn how to reduce potential hazards and enhance quality of life. In another room, your family member will meet with occupational therapy assistant students to participate in activities during the presentation. HOLIDAY TRAVEL TIPS FOR THOSE WITH MOVEMENT LIMITATIONS You want to see your family and friends, but traveling long distance makes you hesitant because of pain or special needs. Ellen Baranowski and Terri Mittenthal, certified Zentangle instruc- tors, will show you how easy it is to learn because it uses repeated pen strokes to draw patterns. Those patterns are then
“tangled” to create beautiful art. Zentangle requires no special ability or experience. You will be required to purchase a supply kit from instructor for $7.
