1. Sand LettersTake advantage of letter writing opportunities that come upduring the day. When you and the child are at the beach,or in the backyard sandbox, practice writing letters in thesand. Show the child how to combine letters to write thenames of familiar people.

2. Sequence CardsCreate uppercase letter cards using 26 3"x5" index cards. Write one letterof the alphabet on each card. Help the child sequence the letters in orderfrom A to Z. After the child is comfortable sequencing the letters, play aletter game with the cards. Place any card on the table and ask the childto find the one that comes next, or the one that comes before your card.

3. Print a Shopping ListLook for opportunities to have the child print letters to make words.When you are creating a shopping list, ask the child to print someitems on the list. If the child asks you how to spell an item, spell outeach letter slowly and wait until he or she has written it beforereciting the next letter in the word. At the store, ask the child toread the items he or she has added to the list and then ask for helpselecting the items that are to be purchased. By combining lettersinto words that help make a task simpler, the child will discover theimportance of letters and the sounds associated with them. This willprovide a successful introduction to early reading.

4. Make an Alphabet BookHelp the child make an alphabet book. Staple together 26 pages of blank paper. Encouragethe child to write one alphabet letter on each page of the book. Supply the child with old

magazines to look through. Cut out pictures that can be placedwith each alphabet letter. Sit down with the child during the quiettimes and read the alphabet book together. Take turns naming theitems on the pages and identifying the letters.

5. Matching GameCreate upper and lowercase letters using 26 3"x5" index cards. Cut each index card inhalf and write the uppercase letter on one half and the lowercase version on the otherhalf. Have the child match the uppercase letter with the lowercase letter. Once all thecards are matched, the child may put the cards in alphabetical order.

6. Memory GameUsing two identical decks of playing cards, selectmatching pairs of cards. For first-time players, beginwith 10 pairs of cards. As the child becomesaccustomed to playing and his or her attention spanincreases, add additional pairs of cards.

Game Directions: This game can be played by 1 or more players. The goal of the gameis to collect pairs of cards that are the same. Mix up the cards and spread them face downon a table. Player #1 turns over two cards. If they match, the player keeps the cards andtakes another turn. If the cards do not match they are turned back over. When Player #1does not make a match the play passes to Player #2. The game continues with each playertaking a turn until all the cards have been matched. The player with the most pairs wins.

7. ClassificationTake a walk to hunt for fallen leaves. Help the child sort theleaves into categories. For example, some may look likemittens, some may have pointed edges, some may haverounded edges, etc.

8. Sorting GameLook for sorting opportunities in your everyday life. Ask the child to sort silverware intolike groups. How many groups are there? Ask the child to describe how the groups weremade. Are the large spoons with the small spoons, or did your child choose to make aseparate grouping also based on size?

9. Block PartyWhile playing with colored blocks, help the childsort the blocks by size, shape, and color. Forexample, select all the large blocks, the large redblocks, the small blue blocks, etc.

10. The Travel GameAs you and the child travel on errands, look for things that are the same or different.Depending on what criteria you use, two items could be considered either the same ordifferent. For example, two red cars might be the same because they are both red, or theymight be different because one is large and one is small. Each time you play, be sure todetermine the characteristics that make things the same or different.



11. Shapes in the SandWhen at the beach or at the sandbox, draw different shapes in the sand and have thechild tell you what each shape is. Then call out a shape and have the child draw thatshape in the sand.

12. CrayonsGet a box of eight crayons and have the child tell you thename of each color crayon.

13. Roll CallMake a list of different shapes. Ask the child to draw the outline of each shape you callout. When all the shapes are drawn, have the child color each shape in a color thatyou specify.

14. Cut and PasteOn paper, have the child draw five of each shape and coloreach one red, yellow, blue, green, and orange. Draw theoutline of each shape on a separate piece of paper and askthe child to place the red triangle in its spot and so on. Be sureto mix it up a little!

15. Color of Everyday ItemsGather up different colored items you wouldsee in everyday life. Have the child tell youwhat color each item is that you hold up.

16. Say It AloudSay a letter from the alphabet. Have the child give you a word that begins with the letteryou called out. Then, call out a word and have the child tell you what letter it starts with.

17. Fill In the BlanksWrite simple words on paper from A to Z, but leave the first letter off. Say the wordwithout the first letter and have the child tell you whats missing. After the child iscomfortable doing this, try to leave a letter out of the middle of another set of words.

18. Go ShoppingGrocery or any other type shopping is a good way for a child to learn the importanceof numbers. Have the child call out numbers he or she sees printed on the groceries youbuy. Show the child how numbers are used for pricing, amounts, and quantity.
