Breb, one of the best preserved traditional villages in Maramureș

The country of Maramureș, in the norther part of Romania, consists of a number of regions. Maramureș is known for itțs small

scaled agricultural character.

BREB BABOU (Breb) Breb is a village in Ocna Sugatag Commune, Maramures County. It is located close to Ocna Sugatag and 40 kilometers away from Baia Mare. The name of the village comes from an old Romanian word for Beaver that is Breb. A long time ago, there where beavers here making dams on the many streams that flow through the village from the mountain. At the last census the village numbered almost 1,100 people.The village stretches practically at the foot of the Rooster’ Ridge (Creasta Cocoșului). You can always walk admiring the surroundings, but you can also rent bicycles suitable for mountain paths and you can venture through Gutâi Mountains. The old traditions are highly respected and preserved, so  it’s no wonder if you see people going to church in traditional costumes. Breb village is absolutely delightful and has won even the heart of Prince Charles who bought here two traditional wooden houses. Here you will find home-made dishes from fresh local products.  You will find accommodation in two boarding houses, Marioara and Lucia and to The Village Hotel. The owner of The Village Hotel, a former UK paparazzo moved here, bought two old houses and transformed them into a nice hotel. Each room in the wooden Maramures houses has been restored keeping its traditional exterior, decorated with hand-woven woolen rugs, embroidered cushions, and colorful ceramics.
