For online courses, recommend adding a “Getting Started” document that explains to students how to use your Blackboard course

How to Request a Blackboard Course
Contact the Administrative Assistant for your department and request that your course(s) be “flagged” in the Banner System to be automatically created in Blackboard
Takes up to an hour for course to be created after being “flagged”
If problems occur, contact the Registrar’s Office at 977-2260 and speak to Matt Gerst

Cross-listed courses require that all sections of the course be “flagged” in Banner in order to work correctly in Blackboard
Courses that are not cross-listed cannot be combined into one course

New Blackboard courses must be requested every semester
Every course in Banner has a unique ID and enrollment
Content can be copied from one semester to another or from section to section
Only content is copied, no student info

Guest accounts for speakers/consultants are available through ITS – 977-4000

Students can only be added to Blackboard classes by registering for the class through Banner. They cannot be added manually.
Additional instructors, staff and graduate students can be added to your courses by calling SLU Blackboard Support 977-2252.

Life Span of a Course on Blackboard
4 semesters (not including summer) from the semester they are taught
After 4 semesters, instructors will be notified when the course will be deleted and the instructor should back up the course and download it to a safe location
Courses are available at least a year in advance for development

Blackboard is accessed through the My SLU portal at: http://myslu.slu.edu
You must have a SLUNet ID to log into My SLU
If you do not know your SLUNet ID, contact the ITS Help Desk at 977-4000

If you get another login screen rather than the My Blackboard screen, call SLU Blackboard Support because something is wrong with your username in Blackboard.

If you are using a computer on the SLU Network in a shared-use environment (library, classroom, lab), you may get a pop-up screen about the Application’s Digital Signature being verified. (This might look slightly different on an Mac.)
Always click the Run button.

The Teach Tab = The Instructor Role = The Instructor Tool Bar
•All about Grading, Communication and Student Management: the Instructor Tool Bar has the Grade Book, Group Manager and Tracking tools on it.
•When you add the Assignment or Assessment tool, the Instructor Tool Bar will add an Assignment Dropbox and a Quiz Grading Dashboard.

The Student View Tab = The Demo Student = The My Tools Tool Bar
•The Demo Student is a default student placed in every Blackboard course.
•As the Demo Student, you see your course as your students do. You can take quizzes, turn in assignments, participate in discussion topics just like an actual student without affecting grade statistics or tracking.
•Student View has it’s own tool bar called My Tools. This does not become visible until the Designer adds student tools to it.
