Welcome aboard!Congratulations on joining the limited group of backend administrators at the BITSAA International Portal.

The backend admin has all privileges to site-wide content management, member directory management, data management, blogs and email messages etc. As you go along exercising these privileges, you will pick up more details about the same.

In the following guided tour, we attempt to familiarize you with one of the most important and commonly-used task at the backend – creating & editing custom web pages with required content for display on the BITSAA.org portal.

Not to mention, at any time, if you face a difficulty, you can get back to the BITSAA Technology Team. We are just an email away!

Locate the ‘Custom Pages’ head in the Menu1

Description

Locate ‘Content Management’ menu item on the main menu of backend. Under the heading ‘Custom Pages’, you will find multiple options:

1. ‘Edit Page Categories’ lets you edit/add the different page categories we have created on the portal.

2. ‘Add a New Page’ lets you create a new custom page on the portal.

Problems

Not able to find the ‘Content Management’ or the ‘Custom Pages’ heads in your admin main menu?

Not every admin has content management privileges. Please contact the Tech-Team.

Understanding the Page Categories2

Description

Clicking on ‘Custom Pages’ shows all the various pages present in the system.

How do I find where my page is located, if editing or where to place my page?

We are proud to tell you that the portal is organized well & custom pages belong to different page categories like About BITSAA, Career Centre, Chapters, Initiatives etc.

1. Use this filter to display pages from a specific category.

2. This will display the pages in the selected category after you click ‘Go’ button.

Inside a Page Category3

Description

For example, the Career Centre category has 2 custom pages as shown in the screenshot.

1. You can ‘Edit’ the page or ‘Preview’ how it will appear in a browser from these two icons.

2. The Page ID is important for custom pages. It forms the URL of the page and allows you to distinguish between pages. It is advisable to assign some meaningful page IDs to pages you make.

3. You can also use the Page Title to find the page that you need to edit.

Adding a New Page | Editing an Existing Page4

Description

You will use the same page to edit an existing page & creating a new page. To create a new page, you need to click on ‘Add a New Page’ on the left menu.

1. Choose the page category from the drop-down.

2. The page ID needs to be inserted here. Please do not change the page ID if editing a page, since it will disrupt the links to the page from elsewhere in the portal.

3. The page title that appears on the top of the page.

4. Based on the page ID you enter, this is the global URL of the page.

Description

1. If you want only registered members to access this page, choose Private, else choose Public for allowing any site visitor to view it.

2. Check other related pages from the same category. Once, you do this, a drop-down will occur on this page showing other related pages the user may like to visit on the portal.

3. Forms can be used to collect user input on this page. If you have a custom form, use this option to attach it at the end of this page. Select the form from the list or create a new form in case you haven’t got it ready yet.

Description

1. Use this Word-like rich text editor to insert content for your page. You can insert formatted text, images, flash, media etc on your web page using this editor.You can access video tutorials to work with the content editor here.

2. In case you are more comfortable with writing or editing HTML for the page, use the Plain Text Editor by clicking here.

Description

1. Once you are done creating or editing the page, you an choose to assign the appropriate version label on this change session along with version notes. Click ‘Submit’ to save the changes.

2. This area lists down previous versions of the page (if not created new by you). You may choose to revert back to a previous version or check the version notes by clicking on the respective icons. This gives information about who has edited the page recently and when.

Linking to your Created/Edited Custom Page8

Description

Now, you will use links to access this page from some other place on the portal. You can use the custom page’s permanent URL to link it to any other page on the website.

1. Use this URL of the page you have created/edited to link it from other areas of the portal. You may also quote this URL for direct access to this page in your communications.

Want to put your page on the main menu of the BITSAA site?

Get in touch with the Tech-Team and they will do it for you. Main menu management privileges are very limited and are retained by the Tech-Team only.
