Project Handbook Biogas Powerplant Project

1. Short description of project

The production of biogas and the conversion into electricity is subsidized in Germany via the EEG law.

This allowed the construction of biogas power plants with up to 500 kW electrical powers as

agricultural facilities in the farms.

The biogas power plant project is planned to be implemented within a farm in the Westphalian

countryside. This farm produces piglets (young pigs) which are produced by hosting around 400 sows

(mother pigs). The pigs produced also 2000 cbm of waste, in which it must be stored to be used as

fuel for producing heating and electricity.

The biogas power plant will use the liquid waste to produce methane gas for heating of the farm. The

power plant also need apart from biogas, energy from crops like corn or grass. Electricity will also be

produced from the power plant, which will be sold to local energy provider for fixed price and have a

guaranteed price by law for the next 20 years. The project is intended to produce electricity in 2009.

The prerequisite for the permit to build the power plant is that there must be an agreed contract

with local farmers to purchase energy crops over 5 years. After the prerequisite is fulfilled, the power

plant construction can be started, in which it consisted of 3 main building blocks which is crop silo,

block power and heat plant, fermentation and waste facilities. Biogas will be produced 3-4 weeks

after starting to feed the fermentation pots.

The project is planned to be finished at the end 2009 so that the goal to produce electricity can be

achieved.

description of pre- and post project phase

1) pre project phase

What triggered the project?

EEG law forced the states in Germany to construct Bio gas power plants as agricultural facilities in farms

The need to use the liquid waste for better use

To generate the cheaper electricity Relevant decisions, events

Decision to do the project in a farm in the westphalian countryside

Relevant documents

Contract with local farmers (prerequisite for starting the project)

Project planning documentations

2) post project phase

What will happen after the project has ended?

Control the flow of resources needed to produce the biogas

Secure more contracts with local farmers

Use of experiences

The team will focus long term on Biogas projects

The team can apply their experiences in other states and countries

The resulting action plan from the lessons learned review will be executed
