Summer reading kicked o May 30 and is in full gear. Thousands of children have enrolled in the “Dream Big… Read!” program. They will read thousands of hours this summer, earning the chance to decorate stars for our library “sky” and receive their choice of a book thanks to sponsorship by the Friends of the Library.

Nearly 500 individuals have registered in the adult version of the program, along with hundreds of our faithful Outreach patrons. All will enjoy reading and chances to win rewards generously donated by many Westerville businesses.

We are deeply grateful to our teen volunteers who donate many hours of their summer vacation to help register children and administer the program. Their generous contribution of time and energy helps make this one of Ohio’s most active and successful summer reading programs.

Your library provides many wonderful programs throughout the year, but none are as important for lifelong learning as your public library's summer reading program. This introduction to reading at such an early age helps dramatically with early childhood development, preparing children to be ready to learn as they enter school.

So, if you have not done so yet, please enroll your child and help us “Dream Big…READ.”

Dream big and read this summer

Brady and Advent serve with dedicationWe extend sincere thanks and congratulations to Ed Brady and Rose Advent on their retirement from the Foundation board. Ed and Rose served two 3-year terms and more, leading the board as treasurer and secretary.

The Foundation is pleased to contribute to the upcoming visit of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Geraldine Brooks. This is an excellent means to help expand the opportunities our library offers.

Ice cream and morePlease join the Friends on July 12 for our 19th Annual Ice Cream Social. This family event will include live music and dancing with bubbles from our bubble machine; face painting thanks to Westerville Parks and Recreation; delicious ice cream with your choice of toppings; and storytimes.

This event will help us launch the Friends' first true fundraiser as we collect donations to purchase a replacement van for Outreach Services. The current van was purchased with funding from the Friends in 2000. It is customized with an hydraulic lift so that book carts can be transported to and from senior facilities. The van makes it possible to take books to homebound residents, area preschools and daycares.

Please help us provide a much-needed new van by donating at the social or using the form on the back panel of this newsletter.

Hot TitlesBooks and Movies coming soon Trains in Westerville

September 1, 1873 was a momentous day in Westerville history. The rst train to come through the village arrived with citizens lining the tracks anxiously awaiting this new form of transportation. By 1893 there were 10 passenger trains a day that came through Westerville.

The railroad was an important part of the community. Businesses sprang up along the tracks. The railroad station was a hub of activity. The sign

at the end of the Westerville railroad depot read “Cols 12.4 miles WESTERVILLE Hudson 132.4 miles.”

The city’s new replica train station, being constructed behind the library near the bike and walking path, will have a display about the transportation history of Westerville, with information and photographs obtained from the library’s Local History Center.
