Basic Outline
• Quick Overview: Copyright VS CopyLEFT
• The Fair Use Debate• Public Domain and the
Creative Commons• BRING ON THE RESOURCES!
COPYRIGHT vs COPYLEFTTwo approaches to ownership and control.
CopyLEFTUsed by people or groups that wish
to allow use.Motivation is primarily creative,
educational, and/or altruisic.Flexible approach to licensing.
©CopyRIGHTUsed by people or groups (usually corparations) who wish to restrict
use.Motivation is primarily financial.Almost always inflexible and/or
prohibitively expensive.
Both systems seek to protect intellectual property rights and define how works can be used.
The Fair Use Debate
• Legally, in the US, Canada, and almost everywhere else, there is some right to use even copyrighted materials for the purposes of education. This almost NEVER allows free publishing (including WIKIs, Websites, or depending on who you ask, your classroom)
