PLAGIARISM• Plagiarism is the act of copying some

else's work and using it as your own. There are two types of plagiarism:

• word for word • paraphrase

• Word for word plagiarism is when you write (or type) three or more words and do not use “quotation marks” to show that you are using someone else’s work.

• Paraphrase plagiarism is when you changeup the sources statement but you fail to use (parenthesis) to cite the person or place you read it from at the end of your sentence.

PARAPHRASE

Always, and I mean always, cite your information and pictures for your assignments, projects, and other work you need it for. Especially if you paraphrase or write it word for word.

For example:• You read: Every year,

about 20% of Americans get lung cancer from smoking.”

Conner, D. Ph.D. (2010, University of North Carolina)

• You type: “Every year, about 20% of Americans get lung cancer from smoking.”

Conner, D. Ph.D. (2010, University of North Carolina)

AVOIDING PLAGIARISM

Usually, everything we see on the internet, such as pictures is copyrighted and makes it harder for us to copy and paste or save images so we can use them for projects and other assignments. So here are tips to try to avoid copyrighted pictures and other stuff:• Avoid using when you see a copyright symbol

(circle with the letter “c” in it) at the bottom.• Search for “free pictures” instead to avoid

copyrighted pictures. Remember: although you may search for free pictures, there may still be pictures that are copyrighted.

COPYRIGHTS

• In high school: You could get a failing grade and suspended.

• In College: You could be kicked out of college if you use plagiarized work.

• In Life after college: You could get arrested.

• In life in general: You could get sued from the person who you plagiarized the work from.
