Autism Spectrum Disorder

What is it?

A childhood disorder where a child has one or more disabilities in social, behavioral, language, play and with verbal communication.(Brown pg.392)

Signs of Autism

Autism can begin in early childhood and continue into adulthood.

They may:

Show little interest

Avoid eye contact

Does not like to be touched

Repeat words or phrases

Have trouble adapting to change

The Face of Autism

A child with ASD can range from gifted to mental retardation. 1 in 150 children are diagnosed. The disorder crosses all cultural and racial boundaries although more boys then girls are diagnosed. Social cues go unnoticed such as gestures and everyday nuances are taken literal. Ex: if you say wait a second, the child will actually wait a second.

Emotional Aspects of Autism

Emotional Outbursts

Depression

Isolation

Alexithymia the inability to identify or describe one's own emotions

Fixation on a specific thing.

Shows lack of interest

Sensory problems

Uneven cognition (Savant)
