BBFC U Rating: The ‘U’ symbol is commonly known as universal. This means its is suitable for an audience of all ages. However it is still the parents/guardians responsibility to decide whether the film is suitable for their particular child. It is impossible to decide what will upset individual children. PG Rating: ‘PG’ stands for Parental Guidance. This again means it is suitable for the majority of audiences, but the parental guidance is stressed more. This may be due to references to drug use or other adult themes. 12A Rating: The ‘A’ in ‘12A’ stands for advisory. The BBFC recommends for the film to be shown to audiences over the age of 12, but as it is impossible to generalize the maturity of pre-teenagers, the BBFC leave the decision of whether the child is mature enough to view the film to the parent/guardian 12 Rating: The ‘12’ rating is a boundary set by the BBFC who have decided that noone under the age of 12 should witness the film rated as a 12. The 12 rating however is no longer used in cinemas, but on DVD films etc. 15 Rating: No minor under the age of 15 is legally permitted to view a ‘15’ rated film at the cinema or purchase a film/DVD etc. The BBFC use this to inform parents/guardians that the film consists of material that youths under the age of 15 may be easily offended by.

18 Rating: The BBFC are very strict on the fact that there is no 18 rated film that is suitable for a non-adult. This is why they enforce a law on the fact that no child is legally allowed to view an 18 film in the cinema or purchase any 18 materials

R18 Rating: Basically… Porn… Only to be sold in licensed sex shops.
