Introduction to CAD/CAMCAD or computer aided design and CAM or computer-aided manufacturing are two independent but interlinked aspects of industrial computer applications. These are essential during the chain of processes that take place during product development and manufacturing, starting with initial design to final production. CAD/CAM software have been saving lots of time and funds during manufacturing, as compared to non-computerized manufacturing. Because of their utility, many engineering students are taking up CAD/CAM courses to keep up with industry demands.

CAD essentially involves the designing and creation of computer models based on specific geometrical parameters. The designs, or models, are visualised on a computer screen as a 3D representation of an object or system. The objects can also be tested before the actual production through virtual simulation of real-world scenarios. Taking the process further, CAM involves the use of geometrical design produced through CAD to control the manufacturing process through automated machinery. Students taking CAD/CAM courses get first-hand training in the entire product development process.

CAD/CAM Training and Relevant SoftwareSome of the CAD/CAM softwares often usedin the product development process include AutoCAD, ProE, CATIA, DELCAM and Unigraphics. Each of these courses has different functionalities that require sufficient CAD/CAM training.AutoCAD is a 2D and 3D modelling tool that is used for drafting, drawing, plotting, solid editing, and imaging purposes. CATIA is useful for surfacing, modelling, drafting and assembly. CAD/CAM courses in this software involve design concepts, sketching, surface and wireframe design, etc. The Unigraphics software is used for drafting, modelling, assembly, surfacing and manufacturing. DELCAM is used for milling and design.

Scope of CAD/CAM CoursesCompanies are increasingly seeking out cost-effective methodologies to design and develop new products. Therefore, those with CAD/CAM training will find themselves amidst a lot of industry demand. Those with this training can find jobs in various professions, most common of which is industrial designing. To have a successful career in the field, it is preferable to have a four-year engineering or architecture degree which includes coursework based on computer based designing. After the completion of a CAD/CAM course, graduates can find employment in specialized engineering and design service firms or big corporations such as car manufacturers that regularly require design work.

Looking Forward Almost all CAD/CAM software have overcome most technical limitations with newer versions released every now and then. A critical trend emerging now is the movement towards standardization of software to allow inter-usability of data. Companies are establishing standards for exchange of data to ensure compatibility of designs. CAM/CAM software are now starting to have more sophisticated visual representation such as solid modelling, which is the more fully defined representation of objects. Future software will also have improved integration of modelling with testing and simulation. CAD voice control software are also now being experimented with the help of voice recognition technology to alleviate the need for using a mouse or typing. It is thus advisable for those with CAD/CAM training to stay open to learning as the software keep evolving and new versions are released on a regular basis.
