PMO Definition

• PMO = Project Management Office– First developed for IT departments [1]– PMI states that a PMO “may operate on a

continuum from providing support functions to project managers in the form of training, software, templates, etc., to actually being responsible for the results of projects” [2]

– Requires continued executive support– Should provide the methodology to measure PMs

PMO Benefits

• PMOs provide the following benefits [1]:– Discipline/Structure for running projects– Standardized project reporting tools which meet

requirements outlined by Sarbanes-Oxley Act – Standardized templates for increased efficiency

PMO – Discipline/Structure

• PMO’s provide much needed structure which meets the needs of the organizational culture

• Discipline is provided through:– The institution of standardized tools for measuring

project success• PMO personnel can be used as an internal

consultant or PMs who run projects [1]

PMO - Reporting

• PMO should provide tools which allow the PM to report project health through templates that meet the Sarbanes-Oxley requirements for reporting– Reporting tools can be provided to government

agencies for financial accounting (depending on the project size)

– Reporting tools can be used to report spend to senior management

• Templates provided by the PMO for PM:– Provide a standardized methodology for project

execution [2]– Provide an efficient method for project execution– Allow for management consensus through
