• McCain one of the oldest candidates of recent times at 71
• Palin first ever female Republican Vice-Presidential candidate
Democratic Party
• Barack Obama and Joe Biden
• When sworn in, Obama will be the first African-American president ever
• Biden will be the first Roman Catholic vice president
• Won with 53% majority
Importance of Voting
• The decision will affect your life, so by voting you influence the future of your country
• It is also important to vote responsibly – some say Boris Johnson’s recent election as Mayor of London was due to people voting because he is an amusing and likeable character, as opposed to agreeing with his views and policies.
• For many people, becoming actively involved in politics can be enriching and exciting – it can bring people together.
Background to Black History
• Most African- Americans were brought over to America in the transatlantic slave trade
• Were always lower hierarchy; so a big change for the new most ‘important person in the world’ to be black
• Martin Luther King had a huge impact on the way Black people were treated- Barack Obama was influenced by MLK
