Autism

Autism is a developmental
disability significantly affecting verbal and
non-verbal communication and social interaction, generally evident
before age three, that adversely educational
performance.
Characteristics-Repetitive activities and stereotyped
movements-Resistance to environmental change
or change in daily routines-Unusual responses to sensory
experiences
Behaviors- Impaired social responses. The child does not
respond to other people in a typical fashion- Ritualistic behavior. The child may exhibit
repetitive behavior, such as rocking back and forth on heels or flapping of hands
- Preoccupation with objects in narrow range of interest
Adaptations-Removing gluten and casein from the Autistic
child’s diet-Intensive Early Behavioral Intervention (IEBI)-Teachers of students with autism must create
a very structured and scheduled environment-Give students with autism more time to
complete assigned tasks-Sequence information or projects into steps

Facts About Autism- 1 in 150 children in the United States
are diagnosed with Autism- 1 in 94 boys are on the Autistic
Spectrum- 67 children are diagnosed with Autism
every day- Autism is usually diagnosed when a
normally developing child stops developing or regresses in development
