AUDIENCE RESEARCH

SURVEY

ASSUMPTIONS:

• I assume that Led Zeppelin fans are particularly the older type. This is because that they

were a band in their prime in the late 60′s to mid 70′s, a good 40+ years ago. Many

people would have grown up with that music and still listen to it so I expect Led Zeppelin

fans to be in their late 40′s or 50′s. I wouldn’t expect many younger fans aged between

10 and 20 to like them as they are more influence by their generation of music which is

mainly pop but does have a range of genres, however some younger people may have

grown up with their mums or dads playing it, and so they may find the music attractive.

• I would assume that more males would be into Led Zeppelin, this is because they like to

demonstrate their power and male presence on stage in various ways. Although however

they may have been seen as female icons, with their dashing good looks and typical 70′s

fashion. There of course are many concert pictures with females in as well as males.

• I would expect such fans to be into some sports as Led Zeppelin were and they may

follow them in that way, such as football.

Page 3: Audience Research Media

ASSUMPTIONS:

• However I would also expect that Led Zeppelin fans like to read fantasy or comic books.

As some Led Zeppelin songs take inspiration from fantasy fiction such as Lord Of The

Rings. I would also assume that Led Zeppelin fans play a musical instrument of some

sort, particularly guitar, bass, drums or vocals as this is what Led Zeppelin used to create

their unique sound and listeners would try to emulate them.

• Although the fashion that was worn was very unique, with open chested shirts and glittery

costumes, I would expect most Led Zeppelin fans to dress casually, with jeans and a polo.

This may be because they are older and less likely to flaunt about in open denim shirts.

but also because Led Zeppelin themselves demonstrates wearing casual clothes in their

early days, such as tank tops and trousers.

AGE AND GENDER

ANALYSIS

• This graph shows that many of the people that answered my question were between the

ages of 10 and 19 years. This does not support my assumption, however this may be to

do with my broadcasting of my survey as I posted my survey on various social media such

as Twitter and Facebook first off. However I did notice that when I posted my survey of the

official Led Zeppelin Forum I acquired many more older users answering, supporting my

assumption that the majority of the people who like Led Zeppelins style of music are

primarily older. Typically 40 and above.

• This graph asking the answerers gender supports my assumptions well. Again I noticed

that when I posted my survey on the Led Zeppelin Forum I acquired more male answerers

which shows that more males like Led Zeppelin which could be explained by Led

Zeppelins power on stage, their hard hitting guitar riffs and even their lyrics which are

typically about women. Some females also answered my survey, again supporting my

assumption that Led Zeppelin may have been seen as male icons.

GENRE AND HOBBIES

Page 7: Audience Research Media

ANALYSIS

• This graph shows that many of my viewers preferred Rock and Roll as their favourite

genre. This supports my assumption that my participants would like this genre . Primarily

because Led Zeppelin were a Rock and Roll band, however there are also genres of

music that are ticked as well as the “other” section, which included answers such as

techno and RnB, as Led Zeppelin experimented with various genres such as blues and

folk, I expected my answerers to also have a various style of music. As most music

fanatics have today.

• This graph shows the hobbies that people may enjoy, I predicted that some Led Zeppelin

fans would like reading, particular comics and fantasy books as some Led Zeppelin songs

were inspired by fantasy readings, such as Lord of The Rings. I would also expect that

some fans would play a musical instrument as Led Zeppelin utilised the guitar, drums,

bass, mandolin, harmonica etc. One thing that I did not assume is that Led Zeppelin fans

don’t like to play sports, unlike Led Zeppelin who enjoyed playing football in their spare

time like many musicians in the 1970′s. This could also be because of the age of the fans

is primarily elderly. Therefore most of my assumptions were correct, however the sports

one was incorrect.

DRESS AND

TECHNOLOGY

Page 9: Audience Research Media

ANALYSIS

• This graph shows how people dress. I assumed that Led Zeppelin fans would dress

casually, maybe with jeans and a t-shirt, as this is what mainly Led Zeppelin dressed like

in their early and late days. Although Zeppelin did wear some outrageous clothes such as

glittery suits and open chested denim shirts, they normally utilised flared jeans, polo shirts

and typical 70′s fashion. I expected fans to follow them in their fashion sense and this

explains why so many people said they dress in casual wear and therefore this graph

supports my assumption.

• I expected most people to say they listen to their music on an iPod or the internet, and

this was supported by the graph as the majority of people like to listen to their favourite

music on the go. I expected some people to say they listen to music on record players. I

would expect an older person to utilise one as they would have grown up with this

particular style of listening to their favourite music. However my assumption mainly

supports that most people would listen to their favourite music on the go, as it is

conventionally easier.

WEBSITES AND OPINIONS

Page 11: Audience Research Media

ANALYSIS

• I would mainly expect fans of Led Zeppelin to visit the Official Led Zeppelin website as well as

YouTube and some social media sites such as twitter and Facebook. YouTube has a large

source of Led Zeppelin concerts and bootlegs available, which fans can easily access. My

graph mainly supports these ideas, certainly a lot of Led Zeppelin fans visit the official website.

I got a lot more responses to this question when I posted this on the official forum compared to

when I posted this on social media. I would expect some fans are on social media websites as

there can be easily broadcasted news to do with Led Zeppelin such as what the artists are

doing now they have broken up. Therefore these answers support my assumptions .

• Answers I got, were the fact they were amazing, and that know one will ever match them. The

answer of “Page”, referring to Jimmy Page, the guitarist and “four talented musicians” supports

my assumption that fans find the band very likeable, like many people who obsess over one

particular band. The answer at the top supports most of my assumptions. “variation in music

style”, relating to Led Zeppelin using different genres in their song production and “impromptu

methods in concert”, stating that they were brilliant in concert and were powerful and on a stage

no-one could match them. These answers support my assumption as to what I thought Led

Zeppelin fans would like about Led Zeppelin.

OPINIONS

ANALYSIS• This question was very unique. It related to Led Zeppelin’s roots and also the

roots of the rock and roll genre. I assumed that most answers would be that

Led Zeppelin did take their roots and the blues were an inspiration to the

band. Indeed most people did say that the blues had an impact on Led

Zeppelin, but some answers also said that they wouldn’t have mattered.

• Overall this somewhat supports and contradicts my assumptions as i

acquired a vary of answers. However the blues roots were significant in Led

Zeppelins sound by evidence given from previous tracks.

“…“The Lemon Song,” included on the 1969 album Led Zeppelin II,

is another of Led Zeppelin’s homages to the blues….”

CONCLUSION

• Many of my assumptions were correct. I could sum Led Zeppelin fans up as mostly male

in the 40/50′s age group who like to read and play musical instruments. They dress

casually and often listen to hits on an iPod but they may also have a record player in their

home. Their favourite websites to visit are the official website as well as YouTube to find

bootlegs and old concerts. Led Zeppelin appeals to people who enjoy a variety of genres

but mostly rock and roll. The only assumption I did not get correct answers or is that Led

Zeppelin fans play sports, however they may have done in their early days, however as

they are older now in their 50′s they may not play as much sport as they used to .

• In Maslow’s “seven types of people” I believe Led Zeppelin fans would be “explorers”,

these people like to try different adventures similar to how Led Zeppelin strove to create

new interesting music by diverging all genres. Even though Led Zeppelin was a primarily

rock and roll band, they wanted difference and they wanted to explore
