Females

Justin Timberlake has a largely female fan base for several reasons. Firstly, he was a member of NSYNC, one of the most successful boy bands of all time. This means that many of the women who were fans of NSYNC will have continued to have an interest in Justin Timberlake. As the rest of the band have not reached the success of Timberlake, most notably in musical ventures, fans of NSYNC will feel that JT is their only current connection to the band.

Secondly, Justin Timberlake is regarded by many to be an attractive artist. He has placed on ‘Sexiest Men of the Year’ lists multiple times. Therefore, this is another reason why Timberlake appeals to a largely female fan base.

Another reason why Justin Timberlake is so popular with females is his appearance in multiple romantic comedies (e.g. Friends With Benefits and Bad Teacher).

Mainstreamers

Since the beginning of Timberlake’s career in the industry, he has appealed to mainstreamers.

Through his association to the band NSYNC, JT was branded a pop artist. This carried through to his solo career. As he incorporates both R&B and dance influences into his sound, he would not appeal to any genre specific markets.

Also, his career in screen acting has consisted solely of Hollywood movies. These, again, appeal to a mainstream market.

Thirdly, Timberlake has collaborated with many popular artists including Timbaland, Nelly Furtado, Madonna and Snoop Dogg. Collaborating with other artists that appeal to mainstreamers further reinforces his place in the mainstream market.

Age: 20-40 year olds

Justin Timberlake appeals primarily to people aged between 20 and 40 years old.

As Justin Timberlake was a member of NSYNC, he will still appeal to those who were fans of the band when they were together. Boy bands appeal primarily to girls between the ages of 10 and 20 years old (younger fans find appeal in the music, older fans find appeal in the members of the band, as they are of similar age). NSYNC performed together between the years 1995 and 2002. Therefore, fans of the band would currently be around the 25-40 years old.

Timberlake’s solo career has widened his target audience, as he targets a young adult audience. By reinventing his music style to keep up with what’s current and keeping himself if not a relevant artist, at least a relevant celebrity face. JT took a break from his music career to pursue acting. As he’d remained in the public eye, featuring in widely released movies, he prevented himself from becoming a ‘has been’.

ABC1

Timberlake targets the ABC1 social bracket as they have a larger amount of expendable income to spend on luxury items such as concert tickets. Justin Timberlake’s concert tickets are very expensive. His concerts sell out quickly, and are resold at high figures. For example, tickets to an upcoming show in Portland were being sold for over $1,000 (see next slide).
