Audience ResearchQuestionnaire for a music magazine…

Page 2: Audience research

In order to identify and appeal to my target market I conducted research into what appeals to them. To do this I created a short questionnaire of 7 questions and posed them to a variety of ages within an age range I was hoping to appeal to.

Would you prefer your music magazine to focus on one specific genre of music or a wide variety?

Genre

Specific genreWide variety

• Most people that I interviewed would prefer a music magazine to feature a wide variety of genres; similar to NME magazine. Although only by a small majority, this suites me as I would like my magazine to have a wider ideal in genre whilst still keeping a focus on all things innovative, and a little bit sub-mainstream, which appeals to me personally.

Would you be more likely to buy a music magazine if it came with a free CD?

Free CD

YesNo

• Most people that I interviewed would prefer their music magazine to come with a free CD. However, upon further questioning most said that it was on the condition they were interest in the artist specifically or if not, then the genre of music.

“C. Habit- it’s the one I’ve always bought” ~Female 30

Which front cover do you prefer?

Although this judgement is based on a recognition of the magazine used and brand loyalty it is interesting to analyse. Clearly this person has become familiar with this magazine and would prefer to buy it so it must stick to it’s own conventions to remain to it’s readers tastes. This also makes it clear that music magazines must be distinct from one another and target a specific audience.

• The second double page spread, composed of one image taking up one whole page and the other page being half filled with text, was by far the most popular.

Which double page spread do you prefer?

“B because the picture used uses a full page which looks eye catching and the picture itself is appealing. The page looks slightly more messy whereas the other article looks quite structured, which is boring”

~Female 17

“B, I prefer the layout. The use of fonts, headings, images and columns are all more engaging the other page” ~Male 28

Would you prefer there to be more images or more text in a magazine?

Ratio

Even spread

• The verdict is close between as even mixture of both text and images and for the magazine to be image heavy. Some also wanted there to be more text than images, in order to appeal to everyone I think that an even spread of the two would be wise.
