Page 1: Audience feedback Evaluation

Throughout the production of my coursework, the attainment of audience feedback was essential in identifying the strengths and

weaknesses of the work. From this I was able to create a piece of coursework that was as aesthetically pleasing as possible.

When using software formats such as Survey Monkey this provided me with access directly to the viewpoints and opinions of the

target audience. Distinguishing points such as the strengths and weaknesses of the production pieces.

Question- Does the film provide an effective snapshot of the narrative of the film? Why do you think this is?

Responses included:

All of themes normally present within the Thriller film genre are present, providing an effective snapshot of the

development into the narrative.

Through the technical elements the piece creates an effective indicator of the narrative of the production.

The audience are quickly able to associate the clips to the narrative of the piece.

This allows me to identify that the target audience can clearly relate the action within the trailer to not only the films narrative but

also the conventional elements contained within the Thriller film genre. Through using elements of the Semic code this creates a

sense of meaning within the piece which can be conventionally found within the Thriller genre. Continuing on from this I asked the

audience a question relating to the use of the technical elements within the piece.

Element Effect What This Tell Me...

Mise-en-scene The use of mise-en-scene clearly allows

the audience member to distinguish

between the protagonist and the

antagonist. This is effectively achieved

through the use of the cross worn by the

protagonist, which the audience can

immediately associate to religion.

The Importance of creating Binary

Opposition within my Production piece

Importance of Symbolism

Lighting Effective use of low-key lighting is

immediately associated with the genre

the production is effective and captures

the audience’s attention within the trailer

maintaining audience attention within the

piece.

Sound Through using the sound this has created

an effective ambient sound that is

conventional to the Thriller film genre

The importance of using sound

techniques to create an atmosphere to

the piece of the production work

Setting The setting is effective in creating a view

of isolation and vulnerability

Importance of establishing setting

Effectiveness as a piece of promotional work. This piece of questioning allowed me to identify how the trailer and the

ancillary products worked effectively as a piece of brand identity, efficiently promoting the film.

Within this I identified that together the pieces work well together working well in promoting all of the key pieces of the

work. This can be specifically seen in the way in which the themes of isolation and vulnerability are connoted through all of

the pieces and how this reflects the pieces within the genre.

Characters presentation

o ‘The characters are effectively represented, in a way in which the audience can relate to’

o ‘There is a clear distinguishing difference between the protagonist and the antagonist’

‘This is effectively presented through the use of the Thriller film elements such as Low-Key lighting and

dramatic lighting when the Protagonist is confronted by the Antagonist.

Good Points Attained from the use of Survey’s

The effectiveness of establishing a clear difference between the antagonist and protagonist. Levi-Strauss noted the

importance of Binary Opposition and the way in which this drives the narrative. This is a key theme within our own

production piece.

Effectiveness of creating themes

Effectiveness of symbolism

Effective use of the technical elements

Effectiveness of Sound which aids in the production of the piece.

Improvements

If I was to produce my coursework again, a key idea contributed by the target audience was that a variety of simplistic

shots that does not reveal too much of the narrative can be just as effective as long shots establishing characters and

location. This also adds more variety to the piece, and is a key point of future consideration.

Through this analysis, I developed and improved my trailer in order to feature a variety of establishing shot at the beginning. This allows

the audience to immediately recognise the features of the setting and associate this to the theme of isolation, before recognising how

this links to the character’s situation.
