What is digital music?

• The music that you hear but that is loaded on and through your computer that can be put on a CD, MP3 player, iPod or played on your computer

Difference between iPods and MP3 Players

iPods

• Made only by Apple Inc.

• Can play AAC (Apple file format), MP3, WAV, and many other music formats

• Most iPods will also play video formats as well

MP3 Players

• Can be made by a variety of manufacturers including:o Sony, SANYO, Samsung,

Zen Creative, SanDisk, And many more!

• Typically can only play MP3 formatted music

• Some MP3 Players will also play video but depends on manufacturer

• iPodo The device that is mobile and small and that plays music

• iTuneso The program on your

computer that organizes your music and allows you to add new music from CDs or from the iTunes online store

o Syncs with your iPod o Allows your to ‘burn’ CDs of

your music to play on audio music players (CD drive in your car, walkman…)

Playlists

• Playlists are what you use to create your "mixed tapes" in your iTunes library

• You can create any type of playlist you want and as many as you want

• They will also sync to your iPod

Purchasing Music

Most common way to purchase music for your iPod:

• iTunes Music Store

o Pros: will sync seamlessly with your iPod automatically integrated into your iTunes library

o Cons: up to $1.29 per song (usually for newer songs) which is

a little pricier than some online music stores

But there are other options as well...

• Amazon MP3 Downloads, eMusic, Rhapsody...

o Pros:  a little cheaper than iTunes Music Store

o Cons:  doesn't automatically integrate into your iTunes

library; you have to manually add the

Stay away from:

• Limewire

• Kazaa

• BitTorrent

• and other similar online services... they are full of viruses and spyware that can damage your computer
