Unlocking literacy: keys to success 05:096 Thomas was bored. His mother was planting tomatoes in the back garden, and Daisy, the dog, was snoring loudly underneath the kitchen table. He had no one to play with and nothing to do. Suddenly he felt very hungry. He opened the pantry and looked inside. He spotted a box of chocolates on the top shelf. ‘Problem number one,’ he thought,“is how to get at it?” After dragging the stool across the kitchen floor, climbing up, reaching high with arms outstretched, he still couldn’t grab it. He ran to get the broom. He climbed up on to the stool, held the broom high and balanced carefully as he poked it towards the top shelf. He watched in horror as the broom knocked other things off leaving the chocolates sitting alone on the shelf. Glancing down, he saw the tomato sauce sliding out of its bottle and spraying on to the floor.The lid flew off a canister of raisins and a packet of biscuits split open. When they hit the floor it looked like the flies were feasting on a forgotten barbecue. As he picked up the containers, he wondered how he was going to clean up the mess. At that moment Daisy sprang into action. She crunched up the biscuits, slurped up the sauce and swallowed the raisins. In just a few seconds the floor was spotless. Thomas turned to see his mother watching her hands at the kitchen sink.‘Would you like hamburgers for lunch?’ she asked. I think I’ve lost my appetite.’ said Thomas slowly. Small poor family living in a small village/town in a kingdom. Main character 10 year old boy. Just lost his family when the village is attacked. He is told by his dying fatherto let the capitol know about the attack and to expect a attack on the kingdom.

Causes a diversion which wipes out half of the invaders and escapes to hit the road towards the capital.His journey is harsh as he has to camp out over night because it is a week long trip. He encounters various troubles along the way incuding wild animals and strangers. While these obstacles are difficult he remembers his fathers last words.

He finally reaches the gates with hope in his heart. At the gate he encounters a arrogant , overweight guard. This guard thinking he was superior and didn't have time for beggar boys would not let him in. Furious at the guards for not letting him in after the long, perilous journey darts past the slow gaurd. Once inside he finally has a bit of luck. He saw the prince mounting for his daily ride. The prince being kind relayed his message to the king. As a reward the prince employs him as his page.

Next to a small campfire the boys wakes up alone and cold thinking back about yesterday and how he came to be there.

He wakes up having slept in seeing his family working outside. Knowing it was his birthday he would get the day off. Dozing in and out he suddenly woke up with men in black cloaks outside. He waited till the noise had passed and went outside his family lay dead on the ground. Except his father who was badly injured but not dead. In terrrible pain he whispered: go to the capitol, tell someone important about this. The whole nation could depend on it

He creates a distraction to get out of the city. He goes into the tavern gets oil and pours it around the sleeping strangers. He then lights it and runs away as the village burns to the ground

He travels to the city encountering weird strangers and dangerous animals. . He travels the next day. That night he encounters wolves. He climbs up a tree to get away. He sleeps in a fork of a tree overnight. The next day travelling he passing a child and a father who pick pocket him. Fortunately he has no money.

He reaches the gates where he is met by a arrogant guard. After his journey his clothes were dirty and he smelt. The gaurd thought he was a begger boy and that he was far more superior than him and didn't let him through. He darts through because the guard is fat and slow.

Now inside he has a bit of luck. He comes across the prince outsid the palace mounting his horse to go on his daily ride. He goes up to him. The guards hold him back, but the prince being a fair, kind man listens too him. He tells his tale to the prince. He believes him because a fire was spotted. Even so to make the king beleive they sent soldiers on their fastest horse to check. Sure enough days later they arrived back and confirmed what was said. They then readied themselves for war and when they attacked they won. He thens bcomes the princes page for a reward.

Now on the run to get ot the city before the strangers invade. He hurries to the gate of the capitol where he is met by a gaurd who won't let him in.

He ducks past the guard and sees the prince. He was able to warn the king and when the strangers attacked the cappitol they were defated easily. As a reward Jason was made the princes scribe.
