MSW management is a tool of management which includes
planning, engineering, organization, administration, financial and legal aspects of activities associated with generation, storage, collection, transport, processing and disposal of waste in an environmentally compatible manner adopting principles of economy, aesthetics, and conservation.
Definition of MSW management
99.45 square km of Patna is divided into 72 wards. Patna has estimated population of 1,683,200(In 2011). Patna generates about 680 tones of garbage/day &
estimated that Patna will generate 1537 tones of garbage/day by 2030(ICT, 2010).
MSW generation of Patna is about 0.498 kg/capita/day. Number of bins in Patna is approximately 80. 54% of total waste generated in Patna is domestic
waste. Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) is the chief nodal
agency for MSWM in Patna. Ramachak-Bairiya is only sanitary landfill of Patna,
which is not functional.

MSWM status in Patna is very bad. Collection of garbage is inefficient. Transportation of garbage requires immediate
attention. No any treatment of MSW occurs in Patna,
unsanitary open dumping is still prevalent here. MSW is mainly composed of biodegradable
organic matter with high moisture content. Lack of coordination among municipalities,
public & private sector.
Conclusion
Provide sufficient number of bins. Also increase size
of the bins. Try to reduce waste generation by taking in to
account of 3R principles. Improve garbage collection & it should be done in
night. Composting is a good method for treatment for
MSW, adopt it. Capacity building & LCA can help in better MSWM. PPP & community involvement is essential. Induce adequate number of skilled persons in
MSWM.
Recommendation
There should be coordination among
municipalities, public, private companies, NGOs and institutions.
Strong will power required Increase awareness among citizens.
