1. Why does the bamboo materials lies under sustainable design?
2. What is the design concept of bamboo materials in reception area of Belum Rainforest that enhance the sustainable design
3. What are the case study that can be research to compare and elaborate more of further understanding in the materials chosen?
Summary
The relationship between sustainable design and materials is the basis of today’s inventiveness. Shigeru Ban said, “ Architecture is not about designing something from a free, fanciful idea. It is about discovering and establishing one’s own principle, some kind of regularity - finding an individual formula to apply to one’s buildings. In another word, selecting the best material that suit with the building in existing contextual is the key in designing.
Based on my site visit to Belum Rainforest Resort, I took interest on bamboo materials that covered the reception area which gave me the feeling of ‘humble to the earth’. It started with a curiosity feeling of the usage of bamboo materials which led to researched on our country’s issue to support the question. The issues that been approached are the limited supply materials to collect for construction and the expensive cost to be covered annually. The solution for the issues are well pictured in Bamboo materials because they are easily to grow and it comes with cheaper value. Furthermore, scientifically proven that bamboo grow 35 inches within 24 hours in 0.00003 km/h with the aim of supplies can be obtain easily. I also confirmed the issues with the existing case study such as Sibang’s School Village in Bali and Nghia’s Restaurant in Vietnam as they used bamboo materials in their construction as well. From the case studies, it has similarity with the reception within Belum Rainforest Resort as they served the purpose to prevent from material constraints. In addition, the usage of bamboo towards construction such as wall, floor, roof and column could serve to prevent from material constraints to happen. Nevertheless, using bamboo materials will enhance user’s comfortability as it has a warm colour and supports ventilation within space. To conclude, bamboo materials are one of the finest material to be used in our construction as it enhance the sustainability design and solved the solution for material constraints.
