ICE

Essex Branch Objectives

• Arrange an annual programme of activities of a professional nature, including meetings, seminars, courses and debates• Arrange visits to works of engineering interest• Promote, develop and expand public perception of the role, duties and achievements of Civil Engineers• Promote civil engineering education in local universities, colleges and schools

We are here to help you – just ask!

• Material properties

• Structural behaviour

• Environmental research

• Applied Science – application to specific human need

• Structural design

• Geotechnical design

• Process design

Science

Structural Engineering (Applied Science)

• Science applied in civil engineering

• Analysis and design of structures that support or resist loads

• Design of buildings and large non-building structures

• Based on physical laws and empirical knowledge

• Uses relatively small number of basic elements to build up structures that can be very complex

• Aim of the contest is to use the West Point Bridge Design 2010 Software to design a bridge that can carry a given loading using the different available elements and materials for the least cost

• Qualifying Round for the actual West Point Academy organised competition closed on 5th March 2010

• The best design submitted during the Qualifying Round had a cost of $136,874.77

• The software is free to download and use and does not require entry to the West Point Academy Competition

West Point Bridge Design Challenge

Page 33: ASE Conference Presentation

West Point Bridge Design Challenge

You can chose to create a new bridge design or load a sample

Page 34: ASE Conference Presentation

West Point Bridge Design Challenge

You can select from a number of sample designs

Page 35: ASE Conference Presentation

West Point Bridge Design Challenge

Which gives you an instant bridge which you can work on

Page 36: ASE Conference Presentation

West Point Bridge Design Challenge

Or you can create a new bridge design from scratch

Page 37: ASE Conference Presentation

West Point Bridge Design Challenge

Start by chosing deck elevation and support types

Page 38: ASE Conference Presentation

West Point Bridge Design Challenge

Note that digging is (relatively) cheap

Page 39: ASE Conference Presentation

West Point Bridge Design Challenge

Then select your deck material and loading

Page 40: ASE Conference Presentation

West Point Bridge Design Challenge

And chose your template (if you want one)

Page 41: ASE Conference Presentation

West Point Bridge Design Challenge

Tell it who you are and give your design a number

Page 42: ASE Conference Presentation

West Point Bridge Design Challenge

Which just leaves you to design your bridge

There are very few basic design tools and items to use

Page 44: ASE Conference Presentation

West Point Bridge Design Challenge

And you can soon end up with a basic bridge design

Let your creative side get carried away however makesure your model is not unstable – can you see why?

Page 46: ASE Conference Presentation

When you are happy you can test your bridge

Keep fiddling until you get a cheap bridge (that stands up)

A cheap bridge may be a bit scary to drive over though

My son Tom will be a scientist or engineer – note centre pier

Page 57: ASE Conference Presentation

West Point Bridge Design Challenge

Tom doesn’t really take the cost of the bridge into account (he’s only 8)

Page 58: ASE Conference Presentation

My daughter Lizzie is more the creative type (its cheap though)

Page 59: ASE Conference Presentation

She may turn out to be an Architect

Page 60: ASE Conference Presentation

But she does lose interest rather easily and go a little too far
