MY IDEAS
The genre of my music magazine that I have decided to produce is a hybrid-genre of indie and alternative.
I have chose to do these genres as I feel as though there’s not a wide range of music magazines available for people who enjoy indie / alternative music; this means that there is a gap in the market.
This hybrid-genre appeals to a niche (alternative) audience. I like the idea of my magazine appealing to a smaller audience. It makes no sense to sell my indie magazine to people at a rock festival.
THE INSTITUTION
Dazed and Confused’s publisher is Waddell Limited.
• Niche publishing company
• Co-owned by Rankin Waddell (photographer for Dazed and Confused) and his
father
The Wire’s publisher is The Wire Magazine Ltd
• The Wire was bought by the staff of The Wire
• It has been run independently since December 2000

AUDIENCE PROFILE
I predict that my target audience would be:
Gender: mainly female
Age: the age range can vary from 16-30, but more specifically 20-26 year olds
Audience: alternative – niche
Education: college/university/early work
Occupation: “ …………………..…… ”
Demographics: E / D
Psychographics: aspirers, explorers
Annual income: perhaps quite low or average
Disposable income: low
Media interests: photography, fashion (photography), arts, creative arts
Media companies need to know this information to perfect their product in according to their preferred target audience.
TYPICAL READER
PROFILE
• The age range can vary from 20-28, but more specifically 20-24 year olds. This is
because at this age range the young adults are perhaps not settled in secure jobs so
they will not have a high paycheque. This results in me wanting to have a cheap price
for my magazine so it will be affordable to them.
• The music my audience would listen to would be indie / alternative artists like The
Pretty Reckless, The 1975, Lana Del Rey, The xx, The Neighbourhood, Mayday
Parade, Two Door Cinema Club and Royal Blood.
• Social media wouldn’t be a key aspect to them, but Instagram, Tumblr, Fleck and
Pinterest would be visited often by them.
• They would maybe shop at small, unknown, online shops and “thrift” / charity shops
that sell unique and alternative clothing, like Blue Banana, Urban Outfitters, Asos,
BeyondRetro and Brandy Melville.
• They would watch old, classic films and “indie” films like 500 Days of Summer, The
Breakfast Club, Donnie Darko, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Submarine.
• My target audience is 20-24 year olds of both genders, and therefore in either work or
education, so their disposable income is quite low, they would enjoy fairly cheap
magazines full of content appealing to them.
POSSIBLE NAMES
ASPIRE (as my target audience are aspirers in the psychographics table)
EXPLORE (as my target audience are explorers in the psychographics table)
ASPIRE & EXPLORE (as above (combined))
UNIVERSAL (suggesting that my magazine is 1) influenced by many places in
the universe, and 2) is seen and bought in many places
HAPPENINGS (a bit boring, but it connotes exciting things will happen / be read)
INSPIRE (hope that my audience will be inspired by my magazine)
MUSIC PULSE (music is a part of everyday life that it’s become a part of our
bodies, it’s inside of us all)
INDIE CENTRAL (connotes that this magazine will be purely based around all
things indie)
MUST (connotes to the reader that they must have this magazine or something
inside it, it’s a must see, must read, etc)
WHAT MY MAGAZINE
WILL COVER?
I want my indie music magazine to cover music, fashion, photography,
lifestyle, arts and other creative aspects of the world.
It will feature new and upcoming indie artists and bands in order to
promote them and gain publicity for them. I will have articles and
interviews to show this.
It will cover fashion, outfit inspiration and also what’s is new / trendy this
season.
It will also cover photography. Photographs of fashion, landscape, people,
lifestyle and places.
It will cover art and other aspects of creativeness, such as featuring artists
and painters etc, and their new pieces of work.
I want new and young artists featured in my magazine, but also older
artists and bands. Maybe artists that have influenced the new ones and
inspired them to become artists.
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
I think I want a double
page spread that features
a new artists or bands and
how they have come to
where they are now. E.g.
who’s influenced them,
who’s helped them, what
they have learnt, what
mistakes they have made.
Maybe this could be
shown in an interview type
format? This would
separate large chunks of
text and make it easier to
read for the readers and
viewers.
