Flowers conveying beauty, fragility and innocence

Text written in Calligraphy- suggesting femininity and conveying fantasy, as fairy-tales often open with “Once upon a time” written in Calligraphy

Lungs provide a link back to reality and to Scientific fact. Lungs are dark in colour, maybe suggesting they’re not functioning.

Sprawled out body and lifeless face, possibly suggesting she might be dead.

Messages in artwork

You can only achieve true beauty and live an ideal fairy tale like lifestyle when you’re dead- linking to the idea of a heaven.

LUNGS- USE OF GENRE & NARRATIVE

The conventions that were established by Goodwin that are used in this image include;

1. Images of the artist- lead singer of the group (Florence Welch) is featured in the centre of the image

2. Demonstrates genre characteristics- there’s an ‘other worldly’ feel to the artwork that features frequently within the genre of Indie Pop.

Narrative theories used in this album artwork include;

3. Binary Oppositions- Beauty (shown via flowers and calligraphy) and Death (shown via Florence's body and face)

4. Todorov- Resolution is featured in Florence’s death and her descent into Heaven.

CEREMONIALS

Messages

The way in which we are appear to others is important to us as humans. However, everyone will have a different perception of a single individual, giving us an illusion of who we think we are.

Mirror image with three different reflections of Florence- suggesting there’s many different sides to someone and many different ways in which we can be viewed. Mirrors could also symbolise how we all care about how we look.

Formal dress and make- up- linking to the importance of appearances and the title “Ceremonials”, which is used to describe a formal event or way of acting.

Title links with idea of an illusion and mirror image and of everything being perceived differently by different people.

CEREMONIALS- USE OF GENRE & NARRATIVE

Goodwin’s conventions that are used in the album artwork include;

1. Images of the artist- Three reflections of the band’s lead singer are featured in the artwork.

2. Reference to looking- The artwork contains reflections which are “looked at” and the key message of the artwork is of the importance of appearances and the way in which people are perceived, which can also be related to looking.

The narrative theories that are used in this video include;

3. Binary Oppositions- the way in which we want others to see us VS the way others actually see us.

LIVE AT THE WILTERN

Body position of stretching body forward with outstretched arms- suggests liberation and freedom.

Florence and her costume are white- suggesting purity, innocence, white is often referred to as blank, suggesting a new beginning and a new start.

Black backdrop- suggests darkness and misery

Messages

The artwork is symbolism of stepping from darkness into light in order to achieve liberation and freedom.
