Description of a short filmA short film is any film with a small viewing time which is not long enough to be considered as an adequate time for a feature film. They are usually screened at film festivals and made by independent film-makers for little or no profit, the film-makers usually have a little budget or no budget at all to make the short film.

Why short films are made? There are many reasons as to why short films are made, some of the reasons as to why people go to the trouble of making short films are:· One of the reason is so they can gain more experience within their own

sector of filming whether that be as director or as camera crew and learn new techniques which they could then go on to use in their future films.

· Another reason is that they can use and show off the skills they already have to raise awareness of the company, directors and other film crew.

· Lastly they have the freedom to be artistic and imaginative to create exactly what you want within the short film. Risky ideas can be used in shorter film whereas they would not be used in feature films because short films use a smaller budget in most cases allowing for risky ideas not to be as risky within short films.

Advantages of short filmsThere are many advantages of making short films from not needing a budget to the wide range of genres that could be used.· When making short films a minimal amount of money is required, this means

to make a short film no budget is needed to be set aside. Allowing for the film maker to get straight to work on creating and producing the film.

· Short films are easier to construct and put together as they only have a small time frame to fill, even though on some short films there is a lot happening in a small space of time the storylines are easy to construct and put together.

· When creating a short film a wide range of genres could be used, this allows the director the freedom to choose what path they would like to take whether it would be too safe with a popular genre and theme or to risk using a more criticised genre and theme.

· Creating a short film would be a good start for new film makers, to have a smaller task as their introduction to film making.

Disadvantages of short filmsUnfortunately short films, also presents barriers for the film company/film makers, these barriers could include the limit of where the short film will be screened to the difficulty to succeed · Although having no budget is an advantage to making short films, the

consequence of not being able to pay for recognisable actors plays at a disadvantage for most production companies as most of the audiences enjoy viewing films with people they are familiar with or have been seen before in film.

· Most short films are not usually screened in well-known cinemas such as Odeon unless they fit into slots between feature films, but on average short films are usually screened in small unfamiliar cinemas/arthouses.

· Short film makers have a tough time trying to make a successful film, as the success for short film is sometimes very difficult to achieve depending on the genre and theme.

What ingredients make a successful short film?A short film will be successful if it has the following ingredients as well as a few other elements.· The short film has to be filled with a lot of visual and audio recognisable content

allowing for the audience to feel part of the short and feel the emotion generated by it.

· There needs to be a good storyline to encourage the audience to continue watching the short film and others that the director will make. If the first film the director makes does not encourage the audience to continue watching or intrigue them then they will not be that interested in watching another film from this director.

· The acting of the actors needs to be of a high quality to allow the audience to feel and release the emotions that they would feel in that situation. For example, if you had a child abduction short and the actor playing the parent was happy when they are meant to be sad does not help trigger the audiences’ emotions.

The audience for short films are:The audiences for short films are young film students, technology users and open minded people who are willing to let in new ideas and themes without being critical before viewing them. The
