ART IN THE CHRISTIAN KINGDOMS DURING THE MIDDLE AGES
MOZARABIC, ASTURIAN, MUDEJAR
Agustín Fernández Alarcón, prof. Geografía e Historia
MOZARABIC
• Lack of unity• Use of horseshoe arch and ribbed domes• Small buildings with thick walls• Different kinds of plots (floor plans)• Great development of miniature in
manuscripts
Asturian pre-romanesque art
• Use of rounded arch and half barrel vault• Use of pillars instead of columns• Basilical plots usually with three aisles, with
apses • Thick walls
Mudejar art
• Native and unique art of the Iberian Peninsula• It is a meeting point between islamic and
christian art (mainly with Romanesque and Gothic)
• Use of bricks, plaster, glazed tiles, lime and timber in buildings (carved- wood ceilings are very usual)
