The Mayan Q'eqchi Community of Saquijá Cahabón, in Alta Verapaz is excited to offer an unparalleled adventure on the Cahabón River.
An awesome blend of mystic Mayan Culture and Pure Adrenaline is what the experience here is all about.
In the thick of the Guatemalan jungle, tucked into the mountains of Alta Verapaz, approximately 110 years ago the community of Saquija was founded by a group of three families. Today the community has grown to around 1000 people, most of whom live as subsistence farmers. It is only recently, in 2006, that they have begun to use the attraction of
the river to improve their circumstances through community based tourism.
This adventure on the Cahabón River is guided by members of the Association of Tourism and Ecological Development of Saquijá (ADETES). Who are a 100% Mayan Q'eqchi community, and have received professional training from international rafting instructors and the Red Cross of Guatemala.
On top of this training, all the guides are locals who were born and raised on the Cahabon River. Therefore, they are not only providing with a tour of the river, it is actually a tour of their home. They are able to tell all the local folklore surrounding the river, their original names for the wildlife, and other stories of their lives on the river.
Rafting the Cahabón River is a once in a lifetime experience. It offers a world class rafting, class I through V rapids, including ¨Rock N Roll¨ and ¨Entonces.¨
It has been mentioned in Paddler Magazine as one of the top twelve jungle river trips in the world, as well as in National Geographic Adventure magazine.
All of the income from this project goes directly to benefit the economy and well being of the community of Saquija. ADETES is a grassroots community organization, and it is by providing this service that they are able to improve their lives and the lives of their children.
