What is the Appalachia?

A cultural region primarily in the mountains.

A diverse set of people that largely use only the land for resources, like food.

Created folklores for entertainment.

Various legends, fairytales, music, and art!

People are typically called “outlanders” because they want to be separated from the busy world or city life.

Folk Art!

Art that is a tradition, passed down through family or friends.

Material to make the art is found in their region, typically in nature.

Folk art comes in many forms including quilting, weaving, carving, etc.

Functional Art is when you are able to actually use it, not just look.Weaving is considered a functional folk art in the Appalachian Mountains.Outlanders would use weavings in their daily life for baskets, clothing, and

blankets.

WeavingCreated with materials like yarn, cotton, string, recyclables, etc.

Warp – Is what you are actually weaving to.

Weft – Is the material you are weaving with and through the

weft.

Many artists use looms.
