StayingSafe The safety and well‐being of the children is a key focus of ours here at BIS. We have a secure site and conduct regular health and safety audits. As a busy school, we always welcome visitors to the school so we all have a responsibility to ensure that adults who come onto the campus are iden fied and conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. Over the coming weeks, we will turn our a en on to the entry and exit procedures for the campus and we need the support of parents from the start. Parents and other adults responsible for children at AP2 are issued with an access card. We ask you to use this to swipe the readers at the entrances to the campus and again on exit. This helps the guards iden fy people with current access cards. Expired or cancelled cards do not cause a beep. Could we now ask that you wear the card while on site, clearly visible in the lanyard around your neck? This will support us all in iden fying parents and visitors quickly and easily.

On March 12th‐14th I had the privilege of visi ng the New York University Abu Dhabi Campus. We are

o en invited to visit universi es and in partnership with the Senior Leadership Team we decide which

universi es are of most benefit to our students and seek to develop rela onships with them so we may

advocate for our students on a more personal level.

The campus at NYUAD on Saadiyaat Island is very impressive. The campus sits alongside the first Louvre Museum to be constructed outside of France and within the coming years a new Guggenheim Museum will be built as well as the Sheikh Zayed Na onal Museum.

State of the art facili es ensure students have an excellent experience within and beyond the classroom. Professors are from around the world and are leaders in research in their respec ve field. The goal of NYUAD to is empower students to become creators of knowledge as opposed to passive recipients of it. As such, research plays an integral role in the teaching and learning at the university. IB students are perfectly poised to enter the liberal arts and science educa on offered at NYUAD. The thoughts below reflect a high degree of crossover with our own educa onal values:

NYU Abu Dhabi draws students from around the world, and prepares them for the challenges and opportuni es of our interconnected world.

NYU Abu Dhabi equips students for leadership in all arenas of human endeavour. It fosters curiosity, crea vity, and cri cal reflec on. At NYUAD, students extend themselves and the fron ers of knowledge.

The residen al life of students is central to the University's academic mission. Learning takes place across the campus, not only in classrooms, but also in residen al houses, through par cipa on in clubs and sports, during informal campus gatherings, and being engaged with the wider community.

NYU Abu Dhabi s mulates advanced research. The NYUAD Ins tute is a major research centre. Research is integral to the undergraduate experience at NYU Abu Dhabi, and it will also drive the University's graduate programmes.

NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU New York form the backbone of a fully connected global network universi‐ty. As one of the two major hubs in the global network, NYUAD creates a unique capacity for faculty and students to access the assets of the en re university system.

University Guidance


I had the chance to take part in a lecture personally and it was an invigora ng experience. Cyrus Patell, Associate Professor of Literature originally from NYU New York created what we see frequently in our ToK classes and required us as par cipants to engage cri cally in discussion. As a visi ng counsellor I was able to meet with the admissions team who read our students’ applica ons and get a thorough insight into the nomina on and applica on process and how applica ons are read. This was an invaluable experience as I got to see first‐hand how students are considered and evaluated. The highlight, however, was to meet with our former Head Boy Rafal Cierlica. Rafal is comple ng his

first year at NYUAD and it was a pleasure to listen to him share his experiences of university life so far.

As luck would have it Rafal was also on campus last Friday to share his experiences with students. Yuen

Lim also from the Class of 2014 joined us for the mini reunion!

I look forward to sharing further insights in to various universi es as we strategically visit more ins tu ons that are a good fit for our students at BIS.

World TB Day WorldTBDay–Anawareness‐raisingcampaignbytheSixthFormSocialCommittee As you may have read in BISBuzz last week, Tuesday 24 March was World TB Day, a global day dedicated to promo ng awareness about tuberculosis. TB kills more people in Vietnam each year than road accidents do, and yet the disease receives li le publicity and there is limited public understanding about how to prevent and treat TB. To help share the World TB Day message of “reach, treat and cure”, the Sixth Form Events Commi ee has run several events this week in an effort to raise awareness in the school community about the prevalence of TB in Vietnam. To start the campaign, on Monday 23 March, the Events Commi ee delivered a presenta on on tuberculosis to the whole school in assembly. The audience was enthusias c and we were pleased to see that many already had a basic knowledge of TB. They were surprised to find out, however, that one third of the world’s popula on is a carrier of the bacterium that causes TB. We ended our presenta on by discussing the posi ve efforts on‐going in Vietnam to try to stem the spread of the disease. Furthermore, on Wednesday 25 March we gave a special presenta on on TB to the support staff of BIS, an ini a ve never before seen in BIS history. We were honoured to welcome Mr Luan Vo, the CEO of Friends for Interna onal Tuberculosis Relief, to lead a Q&A session with the support staff in Vietnamese a er the main presenta on. The support staff showed much interest in this topic and we hope that they have gained an important insight into TB in Vietnam. The Events Commi ee would like to thank Mr Luan, Mr Dyer, Mrs Holmyard, Ms Phuong, Ms Chau and everyone else involved for their assistance in making our campaign for World TB Day a reality.

The BIS Green Day is fast approaching and this year it falls on Thursday 16th April, just 6 days before World Earth Day. More informa on will be coming your way in BISbuzz and on the new BIShub about the dress code, the BIG BIS walk to school and the unveiling of our new bo le recycling bin. For now, please get saving your used ba eries for a big collec on on the lunch me of Green Day. Dalat won the plas c bo le recycling compe on; will they make it an environmental double on the 16th April?

Instruc ons to students using CHQ & term 3 ac vity informa on Please be aware that students will be able to sign up on CHQ (for Term 3 ac vi es) from Monday 6th April at 3pm. CHQ will close on Wednesday 15th April at 5pm.

The ac vi es booklet can be found by following the link to the school website:

Students will be no fied on CHQ whether they have been selected by Friday 8th May. Ac vity dates Term 3

This system has been set up for you to use on a daily basis to select and track all your chosen ac vi es.

Your User Name is your school email address e.g. [email protected]

Your password has been emailed to your school email account. You should change your password to a new password when you first log in. If you have forgo en your login details please click on ‘Forgo en Your User ID or password’ from the CHQ login page. Follow the online instruc ons and a new password will be sent to your school email. Any further issues please contact [email protected]

Term 3 Clubs open for selec on on Monday 6th April at 3pm and close on Wednesday 15th April at 5pm. Most clubs will be randomly allocated to students once clubs close (no longer first come first served) so there is no need to rush when clubs open.

A copy of the Term 3 Ac vi es Booklet will be available in the Documents tab and on the BIS website from Monday 6th April. How to select your ac vi es/paid clubs Step 1: From the Home Page under My Ac vi es 2014‐2015 Term 3 click View/Manage/Submit Ac vi‐ty Choices

Step 2: For each ac vity/paid club add a different number e.g. Monday: Football club add 1, Wednesday: Board Games add 2 then 3, 4, 5 etc to all other clubs you would like to par cipate in.

The SAVE bu on will appear to the right of the ac vity list click SAVE

Step 3: Once you're happy with your choices you MUST press the SUBMIT bu on at the top of the page. You will receive an automated email confirming your club preferences.

Step 4: To cancel a selec on a er submi ng add a 0 to the Desired box then save and submit

Step 5: From the Home Page My Ac vi es 2014‐2015 Term 3 you will be able to see which clubs you have been accepted into/denied from by Friday 8th May. If you click onto My Schedule for week beginning Monday 11th May you can check your weekly club metable.

Try to make sure you have a range of ac vi es which allow you to develop physically, crea vely as well as socially.

For exis ng students in Year 7 please ask your parents for login details as your parents managed the sign up process when students were in the AP1 & TX schools.

Selec on Policy Please note we follow a selec on policy for ECA’s as detailed below: Sports Clubs If the number of students who select a sports ac vity is greater than our maximum capacity students will be trialled for this ac vity. Students will be no fied of this at the first session. This may mean that your son/daughter will be accepted on the ECA for the first week however a er trials will be removed from this ac vity. Dance Programmes The majority of our dance programmes are delivered by the Dancenter. The informa on for these dance classes has already been distributed to parents as the sign up process & payment takes place directly with the Dancenter in district 2. You can contact them for further informa on. Music & Drama For this group of ECA’s audi ons will normally take place via “sign ups”. This will be detailed in the ECA booklet Music Students involved in music clubs during Term 2, will automa cally be “rolled over” into Term 3 clubs. For any students interested in signing up for the following clubs, please see the music staff member, leading the club; ABRSM Theory club, Choir, Male Vocal Group, Concert Band, String Ensemble, Clarinet Choir, Flute Choir, Jazz Band, Brass ensemble, Double Bass Group. All other ECA’s. The online system will randomly allocate students to each ECA. Please note that you may not always get your first choice ac vity.

Sports Day Inter House Athle cs Sports Day 2015 On Wednesday 4th March, students at the An Phu Secondary Campus took part in the annual Inter House, Athle cs Sports Day. The day began with an open 1500m race, with students then represen ng their house in 4 different athle c events. In true BIS fashion, there was a great atmosphere, with stu‐dents suppor ng one and other in a friendly, yet compe ve manner. The day culminated with the Tug of War and Relay events, with the crowd ge ng behind their house for an exci ng finale. Congratula‐ons to everyone that took part and helped out, to make it such an enjoyable day. A special men on to
