TheyactuallytookrootinmymindwhenIrstsawthelm,basedonIanFlemingsbook,whenIwasachild.Iremembergoingto seethelmatthecinemawithmyfamilyandIreallydidbelieveacarcouldy.Ataboutthesame me,Isawsomeoftheearly JamesBondlms.JamesBondwasanotherofIanFlemingscrea onsofcourse,andinthelmsthatfollowed,carsalsoew. BISbuzz Issue 30 | 8 AsGreenDaylunch mewasinfullswing,sevengroupsofYear8studentsrepresen ngtheirrespec ve formsgatheredintheAP2theatrereadytodelivertheirviewsonthebestenergysourceforVietnam.The whole of Year 8 ini ally took part in the research and presenta onbased project in their Geography lessons and within each class a group was chosen by their peers. It was thus apt that the best presenta onsfromeachclassweredeliveredinfrontoftheYeargrouponGreenDay.Thepresenta ons wereallfantas canddeliveredwithacondenceandmaturityaheadoftheiryears.Awiderangeof dierentperspec vesandapproachestothe ques on,WhatisthebestenergysourceforVietnam? wereexploredrangingfromsolarenergytoshalegasandgeothermaltohydroelectric. Thestudentswerejudgedontheirknowledgeandunderstanding,persuasiveness,clarityandqualityof theirresourcesastheywereduringtheini alround.However,forthespecialGreenDayEvent,agroupof Year 12 Higher Level IB Geography students became the judges and asked some very challenging ques onswhichhadtheaudience,letalonethepresenters,quakingintheirboots.TheYear8students deliveringthepresenta onstookmostofthetoughques onsintheirstrideandallgroupsshouldbe proudoftheirperformance.Atrulyremarkablegroupofstudentswhotooktheopportunitytobecome rolemodelstotheirpeersonGreenDay.Asthejudgesdeliberatedintothelatea ernoon,eventuallya winnerwasdecided,tobeannouncedinassemblyonFriday.WelldonetoallofYear8fortakingpartin thisprojectandaspecialcongratula onstothosewhopresentedonthismemorableGreenDay. WeactuallyimprovedBISschool'sappearanceespeciallybyplan ngriceandowers,pain ngpebbles andchairsandcleaningtheschoolgardennearBISTRO.NexttermGrowingMindsisgoingtochangethe nameandfocusmoreongardening,sowehopemorepeoplewilljoinandfeelthenature! TheDebateCompe onhascomprisedaseriesof15debatesbetweeneachSixthFormTutorGroupona rangeofglobalandlocalissues.Ourstudentshavewrestledwithsuchissuesasthebalancebetween na onalsecurityandhumanrights,genderequality,thebestmethodsofachievingsocialchangeandthe impactofcultureonchildhood. Twoformgroups,12/13Oand12/13V,hadsuccessfullyseenothecompe onandsometintheGrand Finalon9th April.Themo ondebatedwasoneofpar cularrelevancetothestudentsatthis meofyear, Examina onsshouldbescrappedfromtheeduca onsystem. Onceagainthedebatewasofhighqualitywiththestudentsrespondingwellunderscru nyfromthe opposi on,membersoftheaudienceandtheSeniorLeadershipTeam.ThewholeSixthFormstudent body voted on who had presented the winning argument, eventually crowning Miss Sargents Form Group12/13Othewinners. Our team hadarockystartthisseason,ge ngusedtoplaying inunityinacompe vemannerandthereforewere all feeling anxious for the upcoming matches, but with a will to prove our strength as a team and a schoola ersomeexcrucia ngdefeatsintheprelim inarymatches.Whenwegotourschedule,wereal ized that our ght would be dicult but that only pushedushardertotryourbest.Overhalfourteam willbeleavingattheendofthisyear,includingour esteemedcoachMs.Crawley,soweknewwehadto ghtforthisone. Ourrstmatchwasourhardest,againsttheinfamousSSIS,ourtoughestcompe tors.Despitetheblister ingheat,weheldourownamazinglyagainsttheirstrongoense,butunfortunatelyletinanearlyshotin thersthalf,andalloursubsequentshotswerentgoinginsowewerebehindforthemajorityofthe match.Wetriedourhardestthroughout,butSSISscoredagaininthelastfewminutesofthematch,leav ingustolose02.Wewereslightlydisappointedwiththeloss,butinourpreliminarymatchwelost62, sowewereallpleasedwithourimprovement.Thismatchedshowedjusthowmuchourteamgrew,and provedtotheotherteamsthatBISwasnotaforcetobereckonedwith. Immediatelya erwardswetookonAIS.Althoughweknewourtoughestgamewasover,wealsoknew wecouldntletourguarddropthetournamentwasntgoingtobeaneasyone.Wefoughthardand endedupontopinourAISmatch,scoringinthersthalfandendingwithawinof10. Ourthirdconsecu vematchfollowedthisandwethrewourselvesintothisgameagainstABCandspent themajorityofourmatchintheirhalf,wescoredtwiceinthersthalfandoncemoreinthesecondhalf towin30. Finally,a eramatchlonginterval,wewentintoournalgameagainstISHCMC.Weenteredourmatch andimmediatelyheldtheupperhand,spendingalmosttheen retyofthersthalfintheirhalfshoo ng. Despitemanya emptedshots,weendedthehalf00.Thispa erncon nuedintothesecondhalfandwe hadtoendthematchonpenal es.Weknewbythispointthatsofar,ISHCMChadbeateneveryother schoolapartfromSSISthesameasus.Thatmeantthatbydefault,whoeverwonthismatch,won2nd placeinthetournament.Tensionswerehigh,aswestartedtakingourshots,unfortunatelyISHCMCman agedtowinthematchandsecured2nd place.Ourteamwasdisappointed,butwespentourlastmatches togetherasauniedteam,andwelivedoutourmatchestothefullest. BISbuzz Issue 30 | 17 SISACGYMNASTICSCHAMPIONSHIPS2015 OnWednesday15th AprilBIShostedtheannualSISACGymnas csChampionships.Therewasali leadd edpressurethisyearasthegirlswerereigningchampions.Wealsohadalargerteamthisyearandwel comednewmembersintothefoldinAngelaThorsteinson,JosephineSwinckelsandNatashaLedger.Iwas par cularlypleasedtoseesomeofourIBstudentsjointheteamandHollyLedger,TunaNguyen,Carola DiBellaallinYear12andAlexIvanovainYear13allledbyexample.Unfortunatelyattheeleventhhour Carola was unable to compete and luckily for our team Gabby Cullen stepped up and completed our troupeof12!WealsolostMaevaArnaudtoinjuryandlookforwardtoherreturningagainnextyear. Gymnas csisadicultsportandrequiresmanyhoursoftrainingtomasterthemostbasicskills.Itis o ensaiditisasportwhereyoutrain80%ofthe mejusttocompete20%!Thegirlscompetedacrossall levelsofcompe onfromLevel1totheOp onalAdvancedlevel.InalmostallcategoriestheAP2team hadacleansweepwinning1st ,2nd ,3rd inLevels1+2,1st +3rd inLevel3and1st +2nd intheOp onalLevel.
