Today’s Friday assembly was based around the word ‘celebration’ and this week, we have much
to celebrate across the An Phu Primary Campus.
When we celebrate, we do it for a variety of reasons: We may celebrate a special day within the
calendar to document historic events, remember important people or something that just may
be special to each individual. We celebrate achievement linked to knowledge and learning and
also how much effort one has put into something to gain much from it. In addition to this, we
also celebrate the similarities that we have across our varied cultures and languages together
with the differences too in helping us to further build up a respect for each other’s beliefs and
lifestyles. Celebration can also be based upon those little moments in time that you see on a
daily basis - saying ‘well done’ or ‘great job’ can often make a huge difference to an individual
or team.
This weekend, find time to celebrate with your children. Find time to say ‘well done’ and see
what reaction it evokes. Often, those small things mean the most!
Well done to all of our returning FOBISIA squads this week after an extremely suc-
cessful Primary FOBISIA Games at the British School, Jakarta. On entering my of-
fice on Monday, I was welcomed by 9 separate team trophies.
The Primary FOBISIA games is termed ‘the friendly games’ and all our children who
have trained very hard over a long period of time had much to celebrate with both
individual successes across all of the 4 sports: Swimming, Athletics, Football and T-
Ball. More details of all the results can be found on page 7 of this newsletter.
Thank you to all parents that have supported the children both during training and
the actual Games last week. Once again, BIS children were signalled out by their
opposing schools as polite, respectful and determined to do their best - at all times!
Well done to both squad members and reserves - we’re all very proud of what you
have achieved!
This week, the first of two Year 6 trips to Earth Camp in Malaysia have
taken place. Children and teachers from 6N and 6I have celebrated personal
achievements that they would never have imagined that they would have
completed.
I am looking forward to hearing all of the stories when they return to school
on Monday and urge our other Year 6 classes who depart early next week to
find time to reflect upon what they will achieve in such a short space of
time.
Regular updates from each trip can be found at the BIS HUB within the ‘An
Phu Primary tab. Look out for more details in future newsletters.
Today, you have received the draft class lists for the academic year 2015-16. These lists are for existing AP1 students
only with new children to the school being assigned to them before the start of the academic year. As outlined in pre-
vious newsletters, if you have any questions about these draft lists, please contact your child’s current class
teacher by Thursday 4th June.
Finalised classes will be sent to all parents together with your child’s End of Year Report on Friday 12th
June. At this time, a teacher and room number will have been allocated to each of the lists in readiness for the
next academic year.
Finally, if you want to beat the traffic, why not come and enjoy a cup of tea, coffee
or fresh fruit juices and smoothies at the Terrace Café.
Located by the side of the AP1 Canteen facing the main field, there are tables and
chairs to use in a shaded area that is cooled by fans. Come along at 7.30am and
stay until the traffic has cleared. In addition, come to school for pick up from
2.00pm and stay until after 3.00pm. It’s a great place to wait and meet other BIS
parents.
More details of the café opening times can be found on page 14.
I wish you all a very pleasant weekend and I hope you enjoy reading this week’s
newsletter.

Schedule of School Fees 2015 - 2016
Dear Parents The Schedule of Fees for the Academic Year 2015 – 2016 has now been published. A copy can be viewed and
downloaded from the school web site by following this link: http://www.bisvietnam.com/admissions/admission-information/fees/
You will note that compared to last year there has been an average increase in the school Tuition Fees of
6.1%, which is the lowest average fee increase for the school in seven years.
We have kept the fee increase to the minimum that will allow us to maintain the same high quality of educa-
tional provision in a growing school. We remain convinced that we represent good value for money and are
comparable with similar schools in Vietnam and elsewhere in the region. Shaun Williams CEO and Principal

TBS Charities Update An update from John Moore, Principal of the British School, Kathmandu
Dear TBS Charity contributors,
I would like to start this update by thanking you for all your support. It has been overwhelming. The generosity and
kindness of all our contributors has already led to some great progress. We believe we have collected enough money
to fully rebuild the 3 Dhading schools we work with and to help the DNC and Bungamati schools with their building
needs as well. The current total is just over £80,000 which is a fantastic effort. We want to keep going with our fund-
raising because, although this is a significant amount, we know that this will fund a small proportion of the school
rebuilding that is going to be needed in Nepal and once we complete these initial projects we will want to do more.
The latest estimates are that around a million children are without schools at the current time. As Nepal drops out of
the headlines it will still need support and all the children and staff at TBS hope we can continue to have a positive
impact on those in incredibly difficult circumstances.
It is now over 4 weeks since the devastating 25th April earthquake hit Nepal. Whilst the aftershocks that still contin-
ue are less severe, they still continue to fuel nervousness across Nepal. Additionally, there is still the worry of a fur-
ther large earthquake occurring and we are all continuing to be vigilant with many Nepali families still sleeping out-
side and experiencing difficulties that the more fortunate of us would find it difficult to cope with.
Our own school community at The British School remains safe and well. Many of our own children, parents and staff
have faced difficulties but the level of commitment to keeping our school open for the children and parents, many of
whom are essential to the aid effort, has been incredible.
The area that we are supporting is Dhading and it is getting back to business as usual with a determination to re-
build that is strengthened by the support from the many charitable organisations. We are contributing in a way that
is probably more unique at the moment by focussing on ensuring there is funding for school rebuilding that is longer
term in nature. We hope that it will be possible to get the 3 schools we work with rebuilt within 3 to 6 months.
This is an example of the type of building
our schools would find useful. This is the
only building that is fully
intact at any of our schools because it was
built to a high specification and was there-
fore much more
resistant to the earthquake than any of
their other buildings. Our engineer has
designed similar buildings for
each of the three schools.
Therefore the funds generated by your kind support can have more of an impact in the longer term on those children
that desperately need your help. We will continue to keep all those who have supported us informed through these
updates and on our school website. Although school closes on June 26th, the work will continue over the summer
when we hope to have detailed plans finalised so that construction will begin. Hopefully it will go smoothly. In conclu-
sion, thank you for every contribution, whether large or small. There have been some tremendous stories particularly
from the children and schools who have been involved in fundraising in some extremely creative ways. This thought-
ful and selfless behaviour from young people who have been affected by the difficulties others are facing, has been
appreciated by the Nepali people we are helping and the fact we can guarantee support in the coming months is a
great source of comfort to them.
Thank you

We have already some mechanisms in
school to continue to raise money for any
more immediate needs.
The British School have always had chari-
ty weeks, and used profit from our tuck
shop and school shop.
This gives us a steady flow of funds for the
short term support that may continue to
be needed.

EYFS Department - F1 Have Fun With Shapes
In F1, we have had so much fun learning about shapes. The children enjoyed exploring shapes in the splash
pool, soft play room and in the water tray. We also played a shape pairs game and matched shapes to make pic-
tures. We had a lot of fun learning 2D shapes such as rectangle, circle, square and triangle and even tried real-
ly hard to say shape names such as pentagon and hexagon!

Year 1 - Building and Structures
Year 1 have been learning all about buildings and structures. We decided to go for a walk in local area to look
at some buildings. We found buildings used for work, play and living. We looked carefully at the buildings and
took note of building materials that had been used. We used a clip board and tick sheet to help us find features
of buildings such as doors, windows and stairs. We passed a worksite and saw a cement mixer and building con-
struction, some of us even saw a man building a brick wall. It was all very exciting!
It was very hot but we had a fabulous time.
When we got back to school we talked about what we had seen and compared notes. Now we know much more
about buildings and structures. We are now looking forward to our trip to Bitexco Tower in a couple of weeks!

PE Department - Primary FOBISIA Games
This year’s FOBISIA games were hosted by the British School Jakarta in Indonesia. There was a slightly small-
er pool of schools with 5 in attendance overall.
On day one, pupils competed in swimming and athletics events, achieving many, many individual medals and
team trophies. BIS finished 2nd overall in swimming (missing out on gold by 2 points!) and 3rd overall in athlet-
ics which again was very close.
Day two saw the football competitions taking place, where pupils competed within gender and age groups with
six BIS teams taking to the pitch. Four of the six teams finished on the podium with the year 6 girls undefeated
in all games.
On day three, boys and girls competed together in year groups for the t-ball competition. All three teams fin-
ished on the podium with U9 in 2nd place, U10 in 3rd place and U11 in 1st place.
Outside of sports, all participants enjoyed team socialising, fun activities and some hilarious bus journeys in
the notorious Jakarta traffic. The
host school singled us out for our pu-
pil’s exemplary behaviour and good
sportsmanship which was lovely.
All coaches were very proud of indi-
vidual and team performances of
which there are too many to mention
individually. I need to thank all trav-
elling supporters and also coaches for
their hard work and commitment to
training.
Please take time to let your own
achievements sink in!

PE Department - U11 Girls Football Tournament
Last Wednesday, BIS hosted the U11 girl’s football tournament in which 5 schools took part; BIS, RISS,
ISHCMC, AIS TT and SSIS. This was a new team for our girls with a lot of the year 6 pupils away in Malaysia,
and they put in a phenomenal performance. Each game got better and better as they got used to how each other
played.
Their first game was against AIS TT where, despite being the dominant team, they drew 0-0. They then played
ISHCMC where they lost 1 -0 which was very unlucky. Their third game was a 1-0 win against RISS and they
then faced SSIS where they slotted 4 goals passed the opposing keeper!
Unfortunately, they narrowly missed out on the final, but finished third overall. It really was a fantastic team
effort for a new team and I am very proud of their performances.
Well done to Teaghan, Gemma, Naomi, Lauren, Malena, Halima, Hannah and Helena.

Saturday Football - Arsenal Tournament
The BIS Saturday Football teams entered two teams into the Arsenal Football Tournament. The first match
took place on Sunday 24th May and will continue for the next two weeks.
It was a tremendously hot day but that did not stop all the players from putting in fantastic performances.
Both BIS teams made a great effort and did very well indeed against stiff competition. BIS U8’s had a scor-
ing frenzy and won 11 : 0 and BIS U10’s put up a determined fight, especially in the second half against a very
strong team but lost 7 : 3. We look forward to seeing what this weekend’s matches have in store!
Well done to all the players and coaches!

PE Department - BIS Aquathlon 2015
On Saturday 13th June AP1 will host its 8th annual Aquathlon. It will take the same format as last year
with a combined AP1 & TX event at the An Phu Primary Campus.
An Aquathlon is a fun and fast-growing sport that combines both running and swimming.
The swimming will take place in the An Phu Primary pool and the run will take place on the big field. The race
briefing will take place at 6.45am and the first race will begin at 7.00am.
Boys and girls will set off at different times (in most cases) and will not race against each other. The distances
for each age group are:
You will require a swimming costume, goggles, a hat if you wish, towel and suitable clothes/trainers to run in
(including a t-shirt which must be worn during the run!). A small snack and refreshment is also recom-
mended for after the event. Food will be available to purchase on the day.
In addition, there will be a parent’s race taking place at AP2 at approximately 8.00am on Saturday 6th June;
Parents can enter as an individual or as part of a team with one running and the other swimming. If you would
like to take part please complete the reply ‘for parents’ and either send directly to Phil Drake at AP2 or you
can hand this into the AP1 PE office and we will pass it on.
