that this work will be submitted by another student fro appraisal”

By the end of this lesson you should be able to• state how peer review can have a blurred line on plagiarism at BCIT• assess your perception of participating in peer review activities• identify the difference between Higher Order Concerns (HOC) and

Lower Order Concerns (LOC) to provide feedback on peer writing• give examples of a common error a student is making and have them

find examples within a section of their work.• prepare an anonymous, shareable document in Google Docs• offer balanced feedback to a peer related to their assignment.

Using a System of Higher Order Concerns (HOC) and Lower Order Concerns (LOC)• This example supports what you said in the last paragraph. But maybe it

should go last?• I don’t understand these points; they seem opposite. Do you mean both?• Your 4th paragraph seems weak. Could you add sources?• You use “product” a lot, but you might mean “produce”.• According to the assignment checklist, you still need to address

“limitations”, for example.• Paragraph 2 could be strengthened with more cohesive words and a

more neutral/friendlier tone or a more concise/semi-technical style.

HOC – useful feedback

Using a System of Higher Order Concerns (HOC) and Lower Order Concerns (LOC) cont’d

• Some of your phrases make your meaning unclear. I’ve underlined and put a “?” in the margin where I had trouble understanding.• For your mechanics, you might want to go back and check

capitalization of proper nouns and punctuation between complete sentences separated with “and” or “but”.• Some of your sentences have ineffective beginnings; take a look for

these words (it is/there are etc.) again when you do your next edit.• Watch for the blue and green underlining marks as the computer is

picking up on grammar and spelling that you’ve missed.

LOC – useful feedback

the room and include your checklist.(paper or computer)

4. Give the second 50/50 ticket back to your instructor who will put the chit into a hat.

5. Draw a new 50/50 ticket, match the number to one of the peer writing samples, and give both HOC and LOC feedback to the peer writer.
