Education for development is our motto. Education does not have any boundary. Getting quality education is a basic right for every individual but what is delivered in many schools across the country is not quality.Books provide us knowledge but not aware of practicalities of our day to day issues. At the Happy Horizons Trust, we conduct several engaging and entertaining activities by applying alternative methods which provide knowl-edge of lifeskills, skills development, employment to young students. Digital Literacy has also been a area we embarked upon.

The area of our projects, the number of schools, team mem-bers and volunteers has increased last year. This motivates us to work more moving into new year. We would be happy to wel-come more people who believe in us and in joining our hands for the cause we work on. Thank you all for the support so far.

Hailing from Bihar, we have seen poverty from close quarters. We firmly believe that a good quality education can lead a fami-ly out of poverty. This has been our driving force over the years. At the Trust, we are trying to improve on the quality of edu-cation, help the students to be mentally strong and trying to bridge the gap between the students and their parents.

The past year has been amazing for us! We have expanded our work more in rural areas and also in Bangalore. A larger team with us now. We have introduced few more interesting Projects which has received good reviews in the very first few months of its launch. We are a 3 years old organization now and as we move into the 4th year, we are gathered with more supporting hands, enthusiasm and motivation from the people who be-lieve in the cause that we are working on.


ABOUT HHT & ITS ACTIVITIES

Education in India is in a state that needs our utmost attention. A harsh reality is that a lot of the kids lack the ability to think on their own. The youth are also unskilled and do not have the necessary skills to take up jobs. Only the kids and the educa-tion are not to be blamed, the parents/guardians too play an important role for their kids overall development but they do not end up paying attention to them.

The problem when analyzed can be traced back to the Edu-cation System. There are certain corrective measures that are being taken today for the kids and the youth, but we know that it is not going to be enough. Happy Horizons Trust is a registered non-profit organization founded with the vision to improve the quality of education in schools across India and bridge the gap between students, teachers and parents. It has been in operations since early 2012, and was formally registered as a Trust on 30 March 2013.

Our work area has primarily been the state of Bihar, we have started our work in Bangalore recently and we look towards expanding to other parts of the country in the days to come.

What differentiates us is the approach towards this problem solving. The domain of education in rural areas offers a lot of challenges to work in. There is the role of the government, the individuals being impacted and the beneficiaries that come from different social strata.

A key aspect of our work is to work on a systemic level inter-vention through different programs. There are multiple projects that have come about by spending considerable time in un-derstanding the social fabric, the rules of the society and what would work and what would not.

Coming from a background in Design and using the principles of Design Thinking, community driven solutions, we aim to im-prove the quality of education, primarily in but not limited to government schools. This allows to be more empathetic in our approach to finding the solutions.

Our motto is education for development. This can be applied in improving the quality of life, social status, mindsets, careers and opportunities, skills development, leadership, women em-powerment and health care. What drives us is a strong belief that education is the key to a progressive society. We welcome anyone who wishes to join us in our mission.

A key aspect of the Happy Horizons Trust is to work at a system level and with the government. Through our work in schools, we aim to have atleast a project for all the different stakehold-ers who are involved as a part of the education system.Here are the projects that are running presently.

A CORE TEAM THAT INSPIRES

Rakesh, a certified PMP, brings his vast experience in Proj-ect Management, to conceptualize and evaluate projects from its financial implications, outreach and impact po-tential. He is an entrepreneur now, heading a tech startup called Leading Dots and is based out of Delhi NCR.

Ruchi functions as the designer in house and is theper-son incharge of designing and creating collaterals for various projects. She is also the Chief Volunteer Coordi-nator at the organization. She is passionate about de-sign and is always keen to organising events to promote Design and Social Entrepreneurship.

Manish heads the operations and mentors the HHT team in Bangalore. He currently working in a leading Investment Bank and brings his experience with Finance. He has been actively involved in social causes since his college days at IIT Madras. He arlier he was Chennai Chapter Coordinator for a pan India social group started by IITians.

Vinay, a BBA graduate, works as the Project Manager in Bihar, and is incharge of local activities, and coordination with the team in Bihar other government authorities. He loves to travel and is the go-to person to do research for our various projects

There is no denying that the education system today is flawed. Even though India has the highest population of youth, we’re stricken with the problem of unemployment.

Motivation levels of children to go to school (government schools) is on a low. We keep reading reports after reports that the quality of education in India today is not the same as it was before. Children in class V cannot read class II text-books. Even the quality of teachers is a huge problem.

Our approach to improving the quality of education, encourages children to have fun while learning. The sessions cond ucted by the champions are full of energy and enjoyment. t is deeply rooted in encouraging participatory learning, learning through collaboration and allowing children to express themselves.

The participatory learning approach is for primary school stu-dents and is the biggest project they are currently working on with different schools. The interventions in the schools are not to remove the role of the teacher but to assist them

We are working towards improving the quality of educa-tion, with focus on basic skill sets like speaking, reading, basic arithmetic, self-confidence, and students making better informed choice about the avenues for them.

The use of Storytelling to boost child confidence is a well known pedagogy technique. We use it to explain different chapters from different subjects and also Stories are remembered for a longer time.

The program in Book Reading, trough its repeated sessions, ensures that the children get into a habit of reading from an early age.

Similarly using the notion of Play increases children moti-vation towards their education.

The use of Videos in our ‘Learning through Videos’ project made learning fun through screening educational films across schools. Many saw a film for the first time!

PROJECT JAGRITI

The word Jagriti (Hindi) means Awakening. The project earlier called the Pick Me, Click Me, Educate Me Project, aims to do just this. It allows the students to understand the different as-pects of education, resulting in increased motivation amongst them.

The project uses Activity Based Learning and Alternative Learn-ing methods to improve the quality of education.

The sessions in the schools are conducted by the Champions, who are selected under the Rukmini Devi Scholarship. They are required to spend 2 hrs a week, one school at a time. Mapping of the champions is done in way that there is atleast one dedi-cated volunteer/champion for each school.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES• To motivate children to attend schools.• To make learning fun and engaging• To visit schools across different parts of Bihar & impart ed-ucation outside the books, related to life skills, creative skills, basic health and career counselling• To improve the quality of education by using alternative learning methods and creative learning. RUKMINI DEVI SCHOLARSHIPS

Started in honor of Late Rukmini Devi, the scholarship is award-ed to female high school students. The award aims to cre-ate local changemakers driving positive social change from a young age. The award comes with a financial incentive spread over 3 years and different forms of training in leadership, man-agement, teaching and understanding child psychology.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES• Leadership training for high school students at a young age. • To boost the confidence of the students to engage with different stakeholders in constructive collaboration towards the development of the society. • To enhance the skills level of the candidates to become capable of seeking employment in teaching, entrepreneurship on their own.

PROJECT FUNCTIONINGHigh schools for the champions to work are select on th ebasis of the vicinity of other primary schools where the champions could function. The champions go through a stringent 6 step selection process, comprising of the following:Reading ability, Writing skills, Extempore Public Speaking, Group Discussion, Personal Interview, Parent’s Interview

Once selected the champions are given training and mentor-ing by the senior champions.

They conduct the sessions under the guidance of the senior champions, and later go on to conduct it themselves.


“I wanted to be a talented girl who takes decisions for herself. I am from minority where girls get very less facilities to do things on their own. We were not allowed to go out from home to anywhere else easily. But, these issues are gone now after joining this organization. One of the purpose of HHT is to uplift women and help them in confidence building. We are having our annual day in which its compulsory for all champions to participate in its cultural programmes. This is a wonderful opportunity for us as most of us did not sing or dance before this upcoming event anywhere. Apart from this, I enjoy conducting the sessions of reading, writing, storytelling, art and craft etc for the children of our partner schools.- Neda Afreen, Champion 2014 batch

I love to be with kids and here I am not only getting the opportuni-ty to spend time with them by conducting few basic learning sessions for them but gaining my own confidence too. I have also done the Internet Awareness Course here to learn the basics of computers and Internet. The best part is its free of cost for champions/volunteers. “I see many changes in myself now from the time I started. I can move around anywhere alone.By conducting the sessions and activities in Pick Me, Click Me, Educate Me project, I also gain knowledge which is done every week on one particular day. The teachers of our partner schools also respect us now seeing our dedication and regularity. I feel really glad when the children/students also enjoy the activities. I have been attached to this organiza-tion so much that I could not stop myself after the demise of my father last year October. Now, I am waiting for our annual day to be held on 24th April. “I feel very happy to be a part of this organization. I have become much self-dependent now. I used to feel difficult in going anywhere alone but that fear has also gone now. They say “didi aur kuch dikha do”. It happens mostly this way.This organization provides three years of association. DIGITAL LITERACY & INTERNET AWARENESS PROGRAM

A program to empower the youth with the understanding of technology and its usages. With ample research to show that children can pick up using technology very quickly, we seek to create a program that enables children and youth to un-derstand technology, its powers and avenues for accessing information, materials for education and ability to do tasks on-line, and a larger goal of empowering them to bring positive change in the society.

CAREER AWARENESS SEMINAR

Public seminars engaging the different stakeholders in system namely students, teachers, parents, government office representatives.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVE1. To introduce new career opportunities to students and guide them towards programs that could result in employability.

2. To inculcate the spirit of Entrepreneurship and the power of building a local economy that results in jobs and opportunities in the local but with a Global context.

3. To create tie ups with Vocational training centers to improve the academic professional and soft skills of the students in sync with the current times.

4. To engage in dialogues with the local schools, government authorities and also parents to get them more interested in the child’s education and prospective career.

5. The team engages with the schools who function as hosts.Students from high schools are invited to participate and en-gage in discussions around careers of their choice. Guidance is provided in finding avenues for preparation for competitive exams.

6. Students are also guided towards using Digital tools to seek more information about the different courses and job pros-pects.

7. Teachers and government officials form a part of Panel that discusses on the challenges faced byt the students of the region. Noteworthy Teachers are also felicitated for their contribution in education.


LEARNING THROUGH VIDEOS

As proponents of alternative learning, we strongly believe in the power of learning through videos and other media. As a part of the project, 100 screenings of different films were to happen across 6 different districts in Bihar (Saharsa, Supaul, Madhepura, Purnea, Katihar, Khagaria).

The project was supported by the Children’s Film Society of India, Mumbai.

The films are aimed at cultural sensitization, knowing about different cultures of the world, storytelling and building in stu-dents a sense of inquisitiveness towards how to do things.

We did this through school wise and community wise screening of the videos. As a follow up to these screenings we to en-gaged with students in discussions on filmmaking, storytelling and cultures of the world. These discussions have a more last-ing impact on these young minds, as they are able to connect with it.

The videos were screened at individual schools, and also at community gatherings. It was done regularly in order to main curiosity and eagerness to learn. To encourage more public participation, screenings were done either in classrooms or at public spaces. The projections were done using a laptop & projector.

The project was conducted in the month of May-August 2015, and the project had an outreach to over 25000 students.

PROJECT JIGYASA (STORYTELLING & BOOK DESIGNING)

The word Jigyasa (Hindi) means the curiosity to know things. Through this series of workshops, we aim to increase the curiosity level amongst children. We do this in the workshop format.

The project comprises of sessions on Storytelling, information about how to create Illustrations and what comprises a book. As a part of the Book Designing Workshop, the students are required to conceptualize a story, think about the characters, illustrate the story and then put it out in the format of a book. The books are then preented to the entire class by the stu-dents narrating the story.

The project is aimed at teaching the aforementioned aspects to the children across different classes.

Through this initiative of the Happy Horizons Trust, it also aims to explore the different aspects of arts, crafts and design to the children and bring about a sense of awareness about different career options like Graphic Designing, Writer, Illustrator.

The project allows us to bring smiles to children, and have a long lasting impression on the children, for something that they will cherish forever.

Private schools are charged a nominal fees to cover costs of instructor and materials.

So far sessions have been conducted in 2 schools.

INAUGURATION OF COMPUTER CENTER

To further enhance the offerings on the Digital Literacy and Internet Awareness program, we launched our own computer center with 7 systems (5 desktops and 2 Laptops).

The center allows us to give focused attention by the faculty and the students are able to get quality time in doing the prac-ticals.

So far we have trained over 50 students at this center and we hope that we can increase the number in the days to come with multiple batches.

The constant challenge that remains is the accessibility of the center to children from the villages and areas that are far. Over the next few months we will work on this and look at how we can take our program in Digital literacy to the doorsteps of the children who cannot come to the center.

Students are charged a nominal fees for the course. This also ensures revenue generation at the organization and maintain quality.


BUILDING A TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS IN BANGALORE

A new destination, new people and a new school in our journey. With the vision to make education more practical, engaging and fun, we began to explore options to start our projects in Bangalore and in the state of Karnataka in general.

The activities have been initiated with our primary project Pick Me, Click Me, Educate Me in a government school by some of our volunteers there.

Language continues to remain a challenge to conduct ses-sions and the dependency is always on the person who can speak Kannada.

We are now building a stronger team of more Kannada speaking volunteers.


IDENTIFYING NODAL SCHOOL IN BENGAL

One of the most beautiful thing that happens to us when we present our work, is that people often ask us whether we can start our work in their area. This is flattering as wall as some-thing that needs to be treated with extra caution. We do not want to be in a position where we commit to work and not deliver.

We start with small things like the Career Awareness Seminar, since it is the one with the and then evaluate the potential of starting our work there.

As a part of this we started exploring possibilities of doing our work in Bengal. We partnered with a local school in Shantipara, Nadia district to start our work there. The school will function as a nodal school for all activities in that area.



ASTHMA CAMP - EDUCATING ON HEALTHCARE

When you work in the field of wicked problems, one is often confronted with challenges that go beyond the initial purview of what was thought to be the problem space.

We noticed that during the winter months, attendance dropped considerably in a few schools. On finding further we found that this could be because students were facing health issues due to the cold.

We organized a healthcare awareness session at the schools, and found that many students faced breathing problems. On further consultantion with local doctors decided to organize an Asthma camp.

Thanks to Dr Anand Bhagat, Dr Ranjana Kumari, Dr (Md) Abu Shale and a leading pharmaceutical company for their sup-port to this camp.

The camp was organized to screen students for Asthma and free of cost treatment was provided to a few whose condition was found to be severe.

We will be doing more of such camps in the days to come and create more awareness on healthcare.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE

‘Always believe that something wonderful is about to happen’ said a wise person once. Nothing encompasses our self-belief more than the above quote.

Everyday, we remind ourselves that we are here for making a change in the lives of the people who do not have the facilities, that a lot of us are fortunate for.

Little do we realise that a lot of our work actually changes us from within as well. We have become more humble and now look at the development space with more respect. The tasks at hand are challenging and we have barely begun and have a long way to go.

We recently opened up a new office in Noida (C121, Sector 2) which would function as a hub for discussions, collaborations and inspiring work. We invite all of you to drop by whenever you wish to. We will share a lot of stories together.

We are confident that with a growing team, more support from various partners, we will be able to continue doing our work with a lot more passion.
