What is academic honesty? Academic honesty is the understanding

and valuing of ethical practices when locating and using information.

Academically honest students avoid plagiarism by correctly citing their sources both in text and in a Reference List (Bibliography).

Thinking about sources. Prior to writing, you will read widely

from a variety of sources, noting your sources, their ideas and your responses to them.

You will learn about the authors, their background and perspectives.

Analysing and responding to their ideas is a bit like having a conversation with them.

Using sources in an essay 1. To acknowledge sources in an essay, you can use a direct quotation paraphrase an idea or argument summarise a number of ideas At AIS we use the Harvard (author-date)

style of referencing. (Twitchett 2013)

Using sources in an essay 2. Your essay or task will have a central

thesis or argument. You will use a discussion of sources to

support your argument. You can also use sources to disagree

with the thesis. It is a good idea to examine multiple sides of an argument.

Using sources in an essay 3.Your in-text reference or citation will contain 3 elements: an introduction the quote, paraphrase or summary your analysis

Example 1. Direct quotation In his discussion of Hitler’s personality,

Brown (2012, p.62) writes“Hitler was intent on ruling the world, a typical megalomaniac, ultimate power was his primary goal.” This interpretation is too narrow, and overlooks the influential people Hitler surrounded himself with and relied upon. Rather than seeking power for itself, Hitler used power to achieve other goals, such as ethnic cleansing.

Example 2. Paraphrase Brown (2012, p.81) claims that Hitler’s

primary goal was to rule the world without peer. This interpretation is too narrow and overlooks the men in Hitler’s inner sanctum that he was reliant on. Hitler, rather than seeking power for itself, wanted to use power to achieve his goal for ethnic cleansing and world dominance of the aryan race.
