Introduction to Differentiated

Instruction (Overview)

There are some key differences between a

traditional classroom and a differentiated

classroom. One of the main differences is that a

differentiated classroom treats students as unique

individuals and uses these studies as a basis for

planning lessons. Differentiated classrooms use

and implement new teaching techniques and

activities to give students choices and freedom in

their learning.

and knowledge areas

Varies student “starting points”

Creates lesson plans that reflect

students’ knowledge levels, interests,

and effective ways of learning

Closely monitors and assesses each

students skills

Students

Understand that your child’s work will be challenging,

readiness-based, and just above his/her proficiency

level

Understand that assignments are relative to personal

skills and understanding

Understand that the work your child does is meant to be

challenging but not to cause tension and frustration
