Course Expectations and Learning Outcomes

Course TopicsYou will be introduced to the

Read-aloud, Think-aloud, Reading Comprehension Talk-aloud and Writing Talk-aloud.

The course is set up to spend two weeks on each Aloud—one week for learning and planning, and a second week for implementation and reflection.

Learning OutcomesBy the end of this eight-week

course, participants will:

Implement the Read-aloud, Think-aloud, Reading Comprehension Talk-aloud, and Writing Talk-aloud

Reflect on teaching and learning for each Aloud lesson

Explore how the Iowa Core Standards relate to the Alouds

Be part of a collaborative learning community

Topic FrameworkFor each topic, you can

expect to spend about four hours of learning and planning. In addition, there will be your classroom implementation, followed by a reflection and/or discussion with group members.

Topic FrameworkDuring the first week, topic

elements might include handouts, presentations, and screencast examples. You’ll also be provided with additional resources that you may choose to use to further your understanding.

Topic FrameworkIn the second week, you

will implement the Aloud in your classroom twice and reflect on your teaching and the effect the lessons had on student learning. The reflections might include a survey, a forum, or a submitted report.

Iowa Core Connections

You will also be looking at what the Iowa Core Standards have to say about writing, including writing in the content areas. You will work together to reflect on how the Iowa Core and the Alouds connect.
