St. John was born in Capistrano, Italy in 1386. He initially practiced law and was appointed governor of Perugia. He began to study under the Franciscan order and, by 1420, began preaching through eastern Europe and Russia. In 1456, when he was 70 years old, he was personally asked by Pope Calixtus III to lead a large Christian army against the Muslims, led by Mohammed II. The Christians were victorious in the battle of Belgrade.Tired from fighting, he was soon stricken by bubonic plague and died October 23, 1456 in the Franciscan monastery of Ilok on the Danube River.He is the patron saint of judges, attorneys and military chaplains and has two famous Spanish missionaries named for him in California and Texas.
