Medical translatio
n
• A medical document should only be translated by someone who is completely familiar with the subject in order to translate accurately each term and meaning and then avoid any
consequences for the patient or medical personnel.
Medical translation :
Medical translation is the translation of technical , regulatory , clinical or marketing documentation , software or training curriculum for the pharmaceutical , medical device or healthcare fields . Most countries around the world require that literature and labeling associated with medical devices or pharmaceutical sold be translated into the national language(s)
process
Because medical translation is typically a multi-step process , it is usually carried out by a translation agency which oversees all project management and the linguistic team . Steps in the process can include :
extraction of text from source format , translation – the conversion of the source language text to the target language text .
• Editing – reading and revision by a separate person to assure adherence to approved terminology and the proper style and voice.
• Publishing – the translation is put back into the original format (e.g., Word document, Web page, e- learning program)
• Proofreading – this ensures that the formatted translation displays correctly with no corrupted text, has proper punctuation and line and page breaks .
• In-country review – a native-speaking expert reviews the translation to ensure that it meets all
specifications and product or therapy specifics.
what is the different between interpreter and translator ?
• Many people seem to be confused as to the difference between an interpreter and a translator. Some even think that the two are the same.
• An interpreter works with oral language. An interpreter converts spoken words from source Language to target Language
• A translator converts written materials in source Language into written materials in target Language .
Medical terminology
• is a vocabulary for accurately describing the human body and associated components, conditions, processes in a science-based manner. It is to be used in the medical and nursing fields. This
systematic approach to word building and term comprehension is based on the concept of:
(1) word roots, (2) prefixes, and (3) suffixes
The word root is a term derived from a source language such as Greek or Latin and usually describes a body part. The prefix can be added in front of the term to modify the word root by giving additional information about the location of an organ, the number of parts, or time involved. Suffixes are attached to the end of a word root to add meaning such as condition, disease process, or procedure.
For example, if a word was to be formed to indicate a condition of kidneys, there are two primary roots – one from Greek and one from Latin. Renal failure would be a condition of kidneys, and nephritis is also a condition, or inflammation, of the kidneys.
The suffix –it is means inflammation, and the entire word conveys the meaning inflammation of the kidney. To continue using these terms, other combinations will be presented for the purpose of examples: The term 'supra-renal is a combination of the prefix supra- (meaning "above"), and the word root for kidney, and the entire word means "situated above the kidneys".
The word "nephrologist" combines the root word for kidney to the suffix -ologist with the resultant meaning of "one who studies the kidneys"
Word root examples: Arthr- (meaning joint) Onych- (meaning nail) Dermat- (meaning skin)Suffix examples: - itis (meaning inflammation) -oma (meaning tumor) -ic, -al (meaning pertaining to)Prefix examples: Poly- (meaning many) Intra- (meaning within) Sub- (meaning below)
