In order to multiply the sum of two numbers by a third number, we have to multiply each number in the sum separately and add

using algebra,

(x+y)z=xz+yz, for all numbers x,y,z.

To find the product of a sum of two numbers by another sum of two numbers, we have to multiply each number of the first sum by each number of the second sum and add all these products together.
