AGRICULTURE

• For over 100 years, from the 1840s to the 1950s, the Australian economy was seen to be ‘riding on the sheep's back'. Agriculture, especially wool, established Australia as a thriving economy with a substantial workforce, service industries and large port cites.

• Agriculture is the biggest employer in rural and regional communities, but if we consider all those employed in the input and output sectors, food manufacturing and processing, distribution and retail, agriculture provides employment for more than 1.6 million Australians.

SERVICE• related jobs (such as computer system design and engineering) are

defined as Professional, Scientific and Technical Services by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations of Australia. IT job creation occurs mostly in the state capital cities of Australia.
