What did you read in “The Art Summarizing” that you can steal and adapt for your own source summaries that you will write for your Exploratory Essay?

(Stumped? Compare what you annotated in the reading with the second category of the rubric for the Extended Journal Response).

Your Turn!!!

Practice writing a 1-2 sentence Introductory Summary that hits all the points mentioned in category 2 of the Extended Journal Response Rubric:

“Writer includes a brief, overall summary of the reading, including the author’s name, main idea (even if that’s not the insight you will be focusing on) and where and when the piece originally appeared.”

Do this either for the reading “The Art of Summarizing” or for one of your sources if you have it and the annotation with you.

Getting from Shitty First Draft to Second Draft

Let’s look at the rubric.

Questions to ask yourself:

In what order should I put my three sources? What would be logical? How would they flow in a way that would allow me to “play” them off each other and compare/contrast their perspectives on my anchor question?


What points on the rubric have I at least touched on in my Shitty First Draft (even if I would get “emerging” on the rubric in this category)?


How do I go about making sure I connect with all the points on the rubric? What are my plans/strategies?


What have I hit on in my Shitty First Draft that is worth expanding? Which of the strategies noted on the Adequate Development half-sheet handout would be the best one(s) to use to expand those points?


How are my sources agreeing with each other? How are they disagreeing? Where and how can I weave that into my essay?
