2. To empower students to speak openly about mental health in
order to educate others and encourage help-seeking. Active Minds is

7. Send Silence Packing is a nationally recognized traveling
exhibition of 1,100 donated backpacks, representing the number of
college students lost to suicide each year. The program is designed
to raise awareness about the incidence and impact of suicide,
connect students to needed mental health resources, and inspire
action for suicide prevention. The speaker we are hosting that same
day, Kevin Briggs, is a former California Highway Patrol officer
who spent many years patrolling San Franciscos Golden Gate Bridge,
where he encountered numerous individuals clinging to life by a
thread people who had lost all hope and could see no way out of
their current situations--and ready to leap from the bridge to what
they assumed would be sudden death, and an end to their pain and
hopelessness.
8. We can change the statistics. Lets start the
conversation.
9. Join Active Minds to: Increase the campus students,
facultys, and staffs awareness of issues surrounding mental health,
symptoms related to mental health disorders, and mental health
resources available both on campus and in the surrounding the
community Reduce stigma toward people living with mental illness so
that students will feel more comfortable seeking help when it is
needed and openly discussing mental health related issues Promote a
general awareness of comprehensive self health by emphasizing
techniques that care for the body as well as the mind Provide
students with easy access to information about various Eating
Disorders, Depression, Dysthymic Disorder, ADHD, Panic Attack
Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and any other mental
illness about which they inquire. Serve as a liaison between the
student body and the mental health community by hosting guest
speakers, providing informational fact sheets, organizing
fundraisers, maintaining a comprehensive website, and organizing
other events designed to reduce stigma and raise awareness.
10. Why get involved with Active Minds? : Among 18 24 year
olds, the prevalence of mental illness is higher than in older
adults. However, this age group shows the lowest rate of
help-seeking behaviors. The high-stress environment of college life
and being on their own for the first time makes college students
especially vulnerable to developing mental health problems. Half of
all college students have had suicidal thoughts but because of the
stigma and shame surrounding mental illness, many students are
suffering in silence. Too often, that silence leads to tragedy.
Active Minds works with students to educate entire campus
communities about mental health, so students can: Understand what
they are going through when first experiencing symptoms; Know where
to get professional help on campus; Know how to talk to friends
they are worried about; Feel supported and accepted while living
with a mental health disorder.
11. Brainstorm Think about what youve encountered as a student
that promotes mental wellness on your campus and anything that gets
in the way. What is our vision for the future of mental health and
those who have mental illness on our campus? i.What would you like
to see our chapter accomplish next year? 3 years? ii.What would we
need to get there? iii.How will the SSP and Speaker on Sept. 14th
help? Think both big & small
