My school division has adopted a new math curriculum and textbook which utilizes Math Talk, a constructivist-oriented teaching strategy which is designed to activate students as active agents in their own learning.

Piaget's theory of cognitive development proposes that humans cannot be "given" information, which they immediately understand and use. Instead, humans must "construct" their own knowledge. They build their knowledge through experience. Experiences enable them to create schemas - mental models in their heads.

By implementing the Math Talk program, I am helping the students work on their mathematics as well as the social skills that are usually passed by in a teacher-centered curriculum. The students will have the opportunity to learn the valued math curriculum while gaining the social skills needed to succeed in later years.
