WHAT IS ACID? An acid is a chemical substance whose aqueous solutions are characterized by a sour taste, the ability to turn blue litmus red, and the ability to react with bases and certain metals (like calcium) to form salts. Aqueous solutions of acids have a pH of less than 7.
PROPERTIES OF ACIDSpH less than 7Neutralizes basesForms H + ions in solutionCorrosive-reacts with most metals to form hydrogen gasGood conductors of electricity
USES OF ACID•HC l- HYDROCHLORIC- STOMACH ACID•H2SO4- SULFURIC ACID - CAR BATTERIES•HNO3 – NITRIC ACID - EXPLOSIVES•HC2H3O2- ACETIC ACID - VINEGAR•H2CO3-CARBONIC ACID – SODAS•H3PO4- PHOSPHORIC ACID -FLAVORINGS
ACID RAIN… Acid rain is a rain or any other form of precipitation that is unusually acidic, meaning that it possesses elevated levels of hydrogen ions (low pH). It can have harmful effects on plants, aquatic animals and infrastructure.
