OPTIONAL SESSIONS

Following the ACCP Critical Care Medicine Board Review Course 2007, you can enhance your review by participating in additional optional education sessions.

Tuesday, August 28 ABIM SEP Program ModulesAmerican Board of Internal Medicine: Critical Care SEP Program Module Chair: Stephanie M. Levine, MD, FCCP

American Board of Internal Medicine: Pulmonary Disease SEP Program ModuleChair: Mark J. Rosen, MD, FCCP

These sessions will review and complete the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Critical Care Self-Evaluation Process (SEP) Module 29R and the ABIM Pulmonary Disease Self-Evaluation Process (SEP) Module 29R. These program modules offer an excellent opportunity for anyone needing to certify or recertifying with the ABIM. If you are certifying for the first time, the sessions are an ideal review of the questions developed by the ABIM. If you are recertifying, you can answer ABIM questions and submit your responses to the ABIM for the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program.

Each module includes 60 questions and will be administered through group discussion with experts and colleagues, using an automated response system. The module is available from ABIM or on-site.

To be eligible for ABIM credit, you must:

• Be a Diplomat of the ABIM.

• Be enrolled in the ABIM CPD program.

• Not have completed either of the SEP Modules to be used for the sessions.

ABIM Diplomats may enroll in recertification at any time after the initial certification by contacting ABIM:

learning objectives:

• Learn and receive feedback on new diagnostic testing and therapeutic options

• Receive feedback on clinical decisions regarding the diagnosis and treatment of patient problems

• Identify the similarities and differences in diagnostic and treatment options for common and unusual problems within the discipline

Tuesday, August 28 Mechanical Ventilation: Past, Present, and Future Co-Chairs: Bruce P. Krieger, MD, FCCP; and Suhail Raoof, MD, FCCP

This course is designed to help clinicians optimize skills related to mechanical ventilation support (MVS). Common problems, such as ventilating the patient with severe obstruction and COPD or the hypoxemic patient with ARDS, will be addressed, as well as the use of graphic displays of airways mechanics in difficult-to-treat patients. The pros and cons of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation, including practice tips, will also be given. Evidence-based information will be highlighted during case management presentations and discussions.

learning objectives:

• Critically examine the newer modes of mechanical ventilator support

• Analyze pressure, volume, and flow waveforms to help improve the patient-ventilator interface

• Analyze the controversies evoked by ARDSNet studies

Tuesday, August 28 Lung Pathology Chair: Henry D. Tazelaar, MD, FCCP

This half-day course will focus on clinically relevant issues to offer a comprehensive review and update of pulmonary pathology. Expert faculty will present content to benefit all attendees, whether you are a practicing pulmonologist, pathologist, radiologist, or a resident preparing for the pulmonary board examination.

learning objectives:

• Understand a pattern-based approach to the diagnosis of diffuse lung disease, including the idiopathic interstitial pneumonias, pneumoconioses, and vasculitides

• Improve ability to recognize both common and uncommon tumors of the lung and pleura, including lymphoproliferative lesions

• Cite the main pathologic changes that affect transplanted lungs

• Increase knowledge about the pathologic data of pulmonary infections and the array of molecular diagnostic tests useful for diagnosis

• Explain the pathologic findings of the most common types of pediatric lung disease

1. Identify educational needs in which the diagnosis and management of chest disease, pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine can be significantly improved by presentation of new information. Instruction will be designed to have a high global health and economic impact. The information will ideally be based on a body of published evidence or evidence-based guidelines.

2. Promote lifelong learning through the use of the ACCP education curriculum, developed to honor clinicians’ time, fiscal practicality, evidence-based guidelines, and current technology.

3. Work with other organizations to develop, sponsor, and/or disseminate continuing medical education programs or enduring products.

4. Implement continuing medical educational delivery systems that meet or exceed the current guidelines of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).

5. Assess the educational significance and impact on learners who have participated in the ACCP

education curriculum.

Custom tours are featured throughout the week. From architecture to art, the Heard Museum’s world-renowned Native American art and artifact collection is worth a visit.

Hummer and Jeep desert tours provide a fascinating way to get to know the intricacies of the plants and animals that call the desert home—while having a rollicking off-road excursion.

No getaway is complete without a shopping spree. Enterprising shoppers will want to visit nearby malls and boutiques, such as Cartier and Gucci. There are more golf courses within a 10-mile radius of Desert Ridge than you can shake your nine-iron at. Horseback riding and hot-air ballooning are other popular options.
