The Institution of Engineers (India), IEI, is a multidisciplinary professional body that encompasses 15 engineering disciplines and gives engineers a global platform from which to share professional interests.
Established in 1920, with its headquarters at Kolkatta, IEI has served engineering fraternity for over nine decades. In this period of time it has been inextricably linked with the history of modern-day engineering.
In 1935, IEI was incorporated by Royal Charter and remains the only professional body in India to be accorded this honour. Today, its quest for professional excellence has given it a place of pride in almost every prestigious and relevant organization across the globe.

The IEI functions with and among the professional engineers, academicians and research workers and provides a vast array of technical, professional and supporting services to the Government and the industries along with the academic and engineering communities operating from over 100 centers located across the country.

The IEI is the pioneer body to introduce, since 1928, non-formal engineering education programme, successful completion of which is ofcially recognized as equivalent to a degree in engineering or a post graduate diploma leading to a master's degree. Every year as many as 60,000 candidates appear for these exams which are held bi-annually at examination centers in India & abroad.

The Chartered Engineer certicate is often useful in the following purpose:-
u To be empanelled as Valuer, Loss Assessor in various nancial institutions like Bank, Insurance companies etc.
u To be empanelled as Chartered Engineer in the Original Side of High Courts, Central Excise and Customs and other similar govt concerns.
u To win contract of civil works from Municipal Corporation and similar govt bodies.
u To be employed and/or promoted in foreign companies.
u To practice as self-employed consultant in India and abroad.
