In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Throughout the process of making, I researched current music videos to get ideas to what makes a good music video and the type of audience a specific genre of music video will attract. This is so that the video can be played on such TV stations as well as radio stations such as MTV and Kerrang and the video/music wont be out of pace on that station. I researched many conventions of music videos. One clear example is of the raised platform, came from Mallory Knox’s video ‘Oceans’.

We for the video we also took influence from The Blackhand’s video for “All about the money’ with the postcard/board idea with writing on it. The close up of the instruments was influenced by Box Car Racers “I feel so “. Another video, which we were influenced by, was The Amity Affliction “Don’t lean on me”.

This is an example of the scene, which we took from The Blackhand’s video. This is a comparison from our video compared to their video. Although there are major differences between the two, we weren’t able to get ahold of boards. We also didn’t want to completely copy the video idea. For these scenes we made sure that there was a good balance of light, this is to show the difference between the happy and sad lyrics within the song that we used.

We took costume ideas also from the music videos of ‘Oceans’ and ‘I feel so’. The way in which our video shows the characteristics to which other videos of the same genre through the use of the mise-en-scene. The band in those videos are wearing t-shirts and jeans, just like in our music video, this is to appeal to a certain audience being teenagers both male and female although the band itself is an all male band.

Both videos also show the band performing in a large room with a black background, which is what we have decided to go for in our music video. The genre which we have gone for in the video is rock, this can be seen by the way the singer uses the space around him and moves around a lot in the space just like on many modern day rock videos.

We have also applied theories by Andrew Goodwin, his theories state that:

There is a relationship between the song and the video to that song

I have identified the relationship between the lyrics and the music video. This has allowed me to include certain scenes to the music video to show the lyrics in video form.

The music video demonstrates characteristics that videos within the same genre also have.

I have linked this into my music video through the use of the postcards showing the lyrics to the song it self during the chorus. The song shows a lot of the front man of the band, which we have also included into our video with the vocalist being the center of attention by being closest to the camera and moving in front of the camera and other band members on certain occasions of the video. We have also linked this theory by making the video, fast in certain areas, but slow in others to suit the genre of the song

There is often an intertextual reference

Our music video outlines some of Goodwin’s theories to music videos.

After looking at a variety of music videos, I noticed that they use a variety of different camera angles to add a certain effect to the video. We implemented them into our music video by showing the close ups of the instruments which we have used as well as adding in the postcard scene and the video from our trip.
